Weekly Cougar News
ConVal High School Happenings - April 16, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
I hope this letter finds you all well and safe. It's hard to believe that it is mid-April with all of the snow outside today!
As I shared yesterday, our new Friday early release schedule will begin next Friday, April 23. If you would like to review the details again, please click here.
The New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) and the New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association (NHADA) have selected 13 ConVal students as designated Scholar-Athletes. Congratulations to our student-athletes who earned this honor! Please see a brief video presentation included below.
I would encourage you to read through this entire newsletter. There are many updates from School Counseling, the class of 2024, ATC, and a spotlight on the great work being created in our 2D Studio Art Class!
We are fortunate to have some students that have initiated a 5K run for suicide prevention. This event, entitled Break the Silence, will take place next Saturday and will begin at ConVal. Please see the flyer at the end of this newsletter. I am so proud of our students for organizing this. All proceeds will go to the American Suicide Prevention Foundation. I will be in attendance with my sneakers laced up and ready to run!
As a reminder, wearing a mask is a part of our health and safety mitigation strategies. We will continue to follow this practice on our school campus.
Best,
Heather

Our Amazing Seniors: Boice Preserves Local History
Brigham Boice is an extraordinary member of the Class of 2021. Over the last four years, he has taken a consistently high number of honors and AP courses in the Sciences, English, and Social Studies and has participated in the Applied Technology Center's Robotics program.
Boice's academic record is impressive in and of itself, but it is his commitment to preserving Peterborough's history in his spare time that makes him a truly amazing ConVal Senior.
Boice’s interest in local history began with a fourth-grade project on the history of the railroad in Peterborough. He presented his project through a series of carefully researched archival photos showing the differences in the town from when the railroad arrived in the late 1870s to the current day.
The following year, Boice began to recreate old photos of historic Peterborough in ink or pencil. His work was noticed by a volunteer at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture, who invited him to work as a colonial interpreter at the Center. From there, Boice took his interest in local history into the digital age. A self-taught computer programmer, he created "Newpast: Peterborough 1886," an interactive game that allows the user to explore Peterborough as it was in 1886 and as it compares to how it is now.
Boice is the recipient of the 2019 Mary Desha Medal for Youth from the New Hampshire chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the 2019 James Grant Youth Achievement Spirit Award. He was featured in a front page Monadnock-Ledger Transcript article last Tuesday. To read the article, please click here.Region 14 - ATC Information and Update

Recipients will be awarded $1,000, and applicants selected to receive a 2021 scholarship will be eligible to apply for an additional $1,000 scholarship in 2022 to be used for the applicant’s second year of college or technical school!

We are still finalizing numbers regarding juniors that require an SAT makeup, organizing rooms and proctors. Make Up SATs will primarily occur on Tuesday, April 27th – but could also take place on the 28th and 29th. A communication will go out early next week to any student (with parent’s copied on the communication) regarding details of SAT make-ups.
Angst - Raising Awareness Around Anxiety
Part 3 of the ConVal Mental Health Trilogy will be screened in the evening on Wednesday, May 5th at 6pm. On top of academic and social stress, the uncertainty and fears of this past pandemic year have brought all of us a lot more anxiety than before. Angst helps break this down, explaining what’s going on, and what we can do about it to help both ourselves and others. It features World Champion Swimmer Michael Phelps, experts in the field, and regular teenagers. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. Scholarship Drive
There are still two weeks left in the Contoocook Valley Board of Realtors' "April Will Be Full Of Prizes" calendar drawing fundraiser to support a ConVal High School graduate in their pursuit of a post-secondary degree.
To get into the raffle, all you need to do is buy a calendar for $10. Every day, a random drawing will be held to determine the daily prize winner. Prizes include four Red Sox tickets (prime seating, together), artwork by Matt Patterson, autographed books by Sy Montgomery, and more.
