Stand Against Racism Read-In Day

In support of the YWCA's Stand Against Racism campaign, on Monday, April 29th, K-5 teachers will be hosting a read-in in their classrooms and inviting families in to read in their classroom from a pre-selected series of books that supports immigrant justice and standing up against racism. Teachers will also facilitate student learning by integrating the ‘Action’ domain of the Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards to give students background knowledge prior to the Claxton Stand Against Racism Read-In Day.

Volunteer Opportunity - End-of-Grade Testing Proctors

We're looking for volunteers to proctor the state End-of-Grade (EOG) tests. This opportunity is open to parents of students in all grades. Parents of younger grades are encouraged to sign up even though your child is not yet having EOG tests. This experience will help parents get a glimpse of what to expect when your child begins EOG testing in 3rd grade.

Available testing dates to proctor are 5/24, 5/29, 5/30, and 5/31. Proctors will need to be available from 7:45am until 12pm. You can sign up for one or more dates. Please email miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you can help with this need. Thanks!

Teacher Appreciation Week Activities for May 6-10

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th - May 10th. We’ve come up with a few ideas to show our teachers how much we appreciate them. Click here for the details. Please also consider any assistant, specialist or someone else whom you would like to thank. Feel free to follow the suggestions in the link above or come up with your own way to show your appreciation. E-mail reminders will be sent to families throughout the week of May 6th.

Lost & Found Items from School Events

Are you missing a crock pot, serving utensils, plastic containers, cupcake stand, etc. that you brought to school for an event? It might be waiting for you in the PTO workroom (room 304). Please retrieve all items before the end of the school year as we plan to donate leftover items. Ask in the front office for a key to the room--it's usually locked. If you cannot visit the workroom during school hours, please reach out to parent Stephanie Jones (stephmissvolgo@gmail.com) with a description of your missing item(s).

Looking Ahead to 2019-2020 School Year--Leaders and Ideas Needed for CLX PTO

We are ALL a part of the PTO! Without all of us, there would be no "P" (parents) and "T" (teachers/staff) to make the PTO! We invite you to consider stepping up for a committee member or leadership role with the Claxton PTO! We are planning for the 2019-2020 school year, and we need YOU and your awesome ideas and talents to help make all of our exciting opportunities at Claxton possible. No experience is necessary; you only need to bring enthusiasm and dedication to helping Claxton become the best it can be! PTO positions are open to all parents or caregivers of Claxton students. We're working on role descriptions and will include that info in the Buzz soon! If you are interested in exploring a role or two or if you have any questions, please reach out to Miriam Scott (Claxton Volunteer Coordinator) at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net or (828) 419-0327.

Broadband Survey

It is a goal of Asheville City Schools to serve the needs of our students and community with a consistent focus on Excellence with Equity. A community partner of Asheville City Schools, the nonprofit Land of Sky Regional Council has presented an opportunity to enhance equity in our students’ access to broadband internet outside of school, while at the same time potentially improving internet access in Western North Carolina for all.

Land of Sky is engaged in an ongoing project called West Next Generation Network, or WestNGN. The goal of the project is to develop a business case for low cost and high-speed broadband internet access. This is an economic development project at its core, with application in the Professional & Technical Services, Home-based business, Small business, Technology, HealthCare & Telehealth, Life Sciences, and Education fields.

To the students of Asheville City Schools, the success of the WestNGN initiative could lead to lower cost high-speed broadband access available at home.

To help make the case for improved broadband access, Land of Sky is requesting that households in the region complete a survey regarding internet access. Your participation in the West Next Generation Network Initiative is welcomed. The data from the survey is being collected to identify unserved, underserved, and competitive broadband environments in Western North Carolina for possible improvement.

The data could be instrumental in getting underserved areas access to broadband internet for the first time and improving existing service with higher speeds, better cost, and better service. Asheville City Schools supports the Land of Sky Regional Council’s efforts to ensure our students have the connectivity they need to succeed in the digital workplace. The survey may take 10 to 12 minutes. Buncombe, Madison, Henderson, and Transylvania Counties are all participating. The survey is anonymous and questions include home internet connection speeds and internet service costs.

If you would prefer to take a survey on paper, copies will be available at your child’s school.
