  • This program is completely voluntary and books are completed at home.
  • Final books are due to teachers by February 19.
  • There is no cost to participate.
  • Books must be an original idea, and can be transcribed or typed by a parent.
  • Books may be co-authored with another student.
  • Pre-made booklets are available for $3 and students can use these for their stories.

Building and District winners will be announced in March. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

In February and March we will have a building emphasis on Figurative Language. We'll share more information in the next few weeks, but wanted to get you started on what promises to be a fun learning experience for all of us!

Figurative language is when you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning. ... There are a few different ways to use figurative language, including metaphors, similes, personification and hyperbole.

COUGH DROPS AT SCHOOL

With the extreme weather changes we've been having, many students have already come down with colds and coughs this season. If you feel that your child needs cough drops at school, please be reminded of the district's policy regarding elementary students:

During the school day, cough drops can only be used in the Nurse's Office, as they are a potential choking hazard.

If is necessary for your child to have cough drops at school, please send the cough drops to the Nurse's Office in a labeled bag, and include a note indicating that you give permission for your student to have cough drops at school. Thanks so much!

WINTER RECESS

A twenty minute lunch recess is held daily for all elementary school students. Whenever possible, recess will be held outside. Indoor recess will be held during inclement weather (rain, harsh snowstorm, or when the wind chill is at or below 0 degrees.) Parents are reminded to dress their children appropriately for the weather conditions. If you need assistance with winter outerwear for your child, please contact the school office. Also, if you are missing items, please visit our lost and found.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A LIBRARY CARD?

We are very fortunate to have a wonderful public library right down the street from Olson! One of our School Improvement goals for 2019-20 is for every Olson student to have a library card for the Woodstock Public Library.

Students in D200 who are 5 years of age or older are eligible for a library card. Children 13 and younger must have a parent's signature on the registration form. Please stop in the library or call from more information. Library cards allow up to 50 items to be checked out and reciprocal use of other Illinois libraries. The library also offers a variety of free programs for students and their families.
