Happy Thanksgiving
Parents, guardians, students, staff, alums, and community members, thank you for embracing SMS. May you find peace, wonder, and joy as we enter the holiday season!
Our next Scoop issue will be published on Friday, December 1st.

Calling All Jungle Tigers!
Today's society is complicated and filled with problems to face and solve. Our goal at SMS is to train our students to be jungle tigers. We want our students to embrace struggles as part of growth and learning. And we want our students to be jungle tigers that make our community and our world a better place!
During the week after Thanksgiving break, we're calling all jungle tigers to identify themselves with a locker poster! Each 4" x 5" poster includes a jungle tiger and the Train Ugly logo. We'll then customize the posters with lines from the Train Ugly Manifesto. Read the manifesto below and pick some words or phrases that have meaning to you! You can then decorate, color, or personalize your poster. HR teachers will hang them above your locker to serve as notice...
we are JUNGLE TIGERS!
8th Graders Head Down the Path!
1) Register for the SHS Spaghetti Supper! Do this by returning the paper or have your parents register online via an email they were sent earlier this week! All registrations are due by Tuesday, November 21st!
2) Enjoy your SHS tour next week. Go in with open eyes and open minds. Clue in on the details to help you make your program decisions.
3) Attend the SHS Spaghetti Dinner program on November 29th. This is a critical event for you and your parent to learn more about the important SHS program decisions you'll be making. Eating spaghetti is optional but attendees should plan to consume knowledge! Attendees also get a head start on completing their high school course request forms.
4) Talk to your parents/guardians! They will be receiving information from us about critical things to discuss about program and course selection. If your parent says "let's talk," do it! Don't run!
5) Turn in your course selection sheet to the SMS office after November 30th.
6) Meet with an SMS counselor to review options and course requests in December.
All 8th graders will meet with SHS counselors after the first of the year to officially finalize their freshman year PATHS at SHS!
Penny Wars!
The SMS SADD Chapter invites all students and staff to participate in Penny Wars to support We Care.
Every year SMS students are blessed with donations for coats, school supplies, food, and many other necessities. Some of those blessings come from We Care, one of our local community auctions. This year we want to give back, and we will be competing with Austin Middle School to see who raises the most money for the cause!
SMS Penny Wars will happen the week after Thanksgiving. Students and staff will use their spare change (dollars or any denomination are welcome, too!) to vote for their team of teachers. The team of teachers raising the most money will become living Christmas trees during our assembly on December 19. Teachers from the winning team will be decked out with lights, ornaments, and holiday decorations and the decorators will be students! All money collected will go to We Care. Turn in your donations before school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday - November 28-30 at the We Care table in the main hall.
Congrats to our All-Region Band Members
News to Know
Wrestling Starts Monday
The first SMS wrestling practice will be held Monday, Nov. 20th, from 3:15 to 5:00. Players should change in the main hall restrooms and report to the Great Room by 3:15. Don't leave any personal items in the restrooms. Take your items to the Great Room with you!
Wrestling parents and team members should add the Wrestling practice and game calendars to their EventLink feed.
Junior Academic Superbowl
SMS is excited to announce the formation of Academic Superbowl teams! Scottsburg High School has a fine tradition of competing in the Indiana Senior Academic Superbowl program and has won several state titles. Now it's our turn! All students will hear more about this opportunity in classes next week and will get a chance to apply to join a team. We'll be forming teams in English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and Interdisciplinary (all subjects) soon! We can't wait to compete against other schools in this comprehensive academic event.
Silent Night
Plan ahead! SMS will be collecting all student iPads on Monday, December 18th. Chargers are to stay in your home. iPads will be returned to students the first morning we return to school on January 4, 2018. Plan ahead to enjoy a few 'silent nights' over your Christmas break.
