FYI - Tons of Important Information

Heritage Day - This year's Heritage Day will be on April 29th and fourth graders will be participating this year by creating posters to display along the track (last year it was only fifth and sixth graders). For this reason, we are in need of 8 tri-fold presentation boards if you are willing and able to donate.

Proctors - EOG Testing is right around the corner and we are in need of testing proctors - If you would like to take advantage of this wonderful volunteer opportunity please contact Assistant Principal Cory Trivett at

Yearbooks - If you would still like to purchase a yearbook, the deadline has been extended until Friday, March 18th. Yearbooks are $15 and can be purchased through school via the form provided or online.

Lost and Found - Please encourage your child to look through the school's lost and found (we have tables full of jackets!) and claim any lost items -- all items will be donated during Spring Break if left unclaimed.

Blackburn Mixes It Up - Wednesday, March 23rd our entire school staff will be mixing it up a little as we take the opportunity to expose ourselves to other people's positions in the building. We drew names from a hat to determine our positions - it is our hope that students enjoy themselves as we take on new roles in an effort to Sharpen the Saw. I will be Debbie Meyers (our school secretary) and Ms. Bolick will be Mrs. Minton-Cable (our school principal) from 9:00-1:00 that day. During that time frame Mrs. Bolick (one of our Exceptional Children's teachers) will be in my room and Mrs. Coulter (our of our school's custodians) will be in Ms. Bolick's room.

PTO Evening Event – Blackburn’s PTO will be holding an evening event on Friday, April 29th from 6-8pm. Mrs. Schlegenhauf and Mrs. Akroyd are planning performances/displays for the evening and students will have the opportunity to purchase and decorate a ‘TILE’ that will forever be a part of Blackburn’s Tile Wall. There will be more details to come! Please mark your calendars for this event.

Math and Science

This week in math we will continue working on our geometry unit focusing on types of angles (right, acute, and obtuse) within various polygons as well as area (squares and rectangles only) and perimeter (of regular closed shapes). We will conclude the week with some more math centers including: Roll the Dice (an area review), Investigating Area, Dream Design (perimeter review), Forms of Fractions and Decimals, This Remains a Problem (division review), and "Sub-traction" (subtraction review).

W.I.G. Update: Since starting our classroom W.I.G. my homeroom has had 100% completion and Ms. Bolick's room has had 96% (which is the best we have had ALL year!). Additionally, we turned it into a friendly competition between 4th, 5th, and 6th grade to see which grade level could reach 1,000 objectives first....well...the kids don't know yet, BUT WE WON, because your kids are awesome and they really stepped up their game with a whopping 589 objectives in my two classes alone this week - simply amazing!!!

This week we have taken a break from science to begin working on our Heritage Day projects. Students are learning a lot and seem to be looking forward to our school-wide Heritage Day on April 29th.

The Leader in Me

At this point in the school year, we are spending some time refreshing our minds with each habit as we complete various activities. This week we will be focusing our attention on Habit 3: Put First Things First and Emotional Bank Accounts (i.e. Drops in the Bucket). Also, please notice my note above about Blackburn Mixing it Up in an effort to Sharpen the Saw.

Our school is also asking for your help in assessing your satisfaction with our involvement in The Leader in Me program through the following survey:
