COUNSELORS CORNER
Talking to your Child about Tragedy
We are all shocked and saddened by the events that occurred at Oxford High School this week. We know that members of the Novi community may have friends and family in the Oxford community and our hearts are with you.
It is likely that your child will have questions or concerns about these events. This often means that your child is looking for reassurance that they are safe. As adults, we can listen, offer reassurance, and perhaps most importantly, give them a hug, no matter what their age. There are also a variety of resources available to assist with speaking to your child including this link: Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers. Additional resources that we shared with our teaching staff, are attached for you to view.
Our building counselors and social workers are available to speak with any child who is having a difficult time.

NEW BUS SCHEDULE FOR BUS RIDERS
By now you should have received notice from Dr. Matthews that Novi is modifying the busing process due to a driver shortage. There will be buses that do not run on a certain day of the week. The following list shows what busses will NOT run on what days:
Monday - busses B, E, G, X will not run
Tuesday - busses D, I, J, R, T will not run
Wednesday - busses H, K, N, W, Y will not run

For parents who want to make arrangements for after school CARE on the days their bus does not run, please contact Lori Croad at Lori.Croad@NoviK12.org or call 248-449-1257. Space is limited so act as soon as possible.
2021 - 5th/6th GRADE CAMP
Your son/daughter will be attending camp this year with his/her classmates and teachers at the Walled Lake Outdoor Education Center. This is a science based program that is directly related to the curriculum taught in elementary school. At the Walled Lake Education Center, students became part of the web of life; they experience nature first-hand and learn about the impact they have on their environment. The goal of the program is to provide students with an integrated, experiential curriculum to increase awareness, appreciation and understanding of the natural world.
This year will include both 5th and 6th grade. Each class will attend and participate in two days of activities returning home at the end of each day. Transportation is provided to and from camp from the school.
The following dates have been scheduled for the listed classes. Click the thumbnails below to enlarge the images:
Absent Line
For 5th grade: 248-449-1251 and for 6th grade: 248-449-1271.
In addition, please remember to spell your students first and last name, the reason for the absence, and their homeroom teacher if you know it.
EARLY RELEASE - Students leaving before the end of the day need to be picked up before 2 p.m. Please call the attendance line to let us us know you will be picking your student up before you get here so that we may have your child ready to go.
ABSENT HOMEWORK
Novi Meadows Parents:
When students are absent, teachers will do their best to fill them in on the work they miss. Teachers utilize a variety of tools to keep students up to date on work (Schoology, Google Classroom, on-line planners, etc.). It is not feasible to have absent students Zoom into classes that are happening at school. In addition, teachers are not able to privately Zoom with students who are absent to reteach the lessons. Teachers will provide the work that can be replicated to students upon their return. It is not always possible to recreate classroom discussion or activities

DROP OFF TIMES AND FLOW OF TRAFFIC
This year we have modified our drop off times for the beginning of the day to help with traffic and congestion on Taft Rd. We will be opening the doors to Meadows at 7:15am (School still starts at 7:30am).
Students who are taking a bus, parent drop off, or walkers will be able to enter the building at this time. Students will go to their respective cafeteria and wait until 7:20am. At that time they will be released to their classrooms.
If you are a parent who drives their students to or from school, please make sure to pull all the way up to allow for the maximum number of cars along the sidewalk. In addition, if you are able to carpool, that might help to alleviate the large number of vehicles in the line.
In addition, please do not drop students off in the middle of the parking lot. This creates an unsafe situation for them and for other drivers who are trying to navigate a busy area. Please wait in the line and drop them off along the curb. They should always exit the vehicle on the right.
Parents of 6th graders who are dropping off students should be aware that buses will need to use the left lane and turn in front of the 6th grade house to access the loading area for students. Please do not block the driveway.
Thank you again for your patience as we focus on getting students to and from school safely.
Sincerely,
Principals Fenchel and Brickey
