✤Book Summary✤

A boy named Jonas lives in a community that he perceives as dull. The community goes against inequality, conflict and injustice, so you can't blame him. In this community all are viewed the same, except Jonas. During the Ceremony of Twelve, an event where 12's are given their Life Assignments (meaning jobs), Jonas becomes the new Receiver. With this honor, he meets The Giver, who teaches Jonas that power lies in feelings. This made Jonas see the community differently, such as color. He then stopped taking his medicine which caused his steering's for a girl,Fiona, to continue. At home, he lies to his parents about taking his meds, and other things. His dad, whose a nurturer, takes care of a new born baby named Gabriel. Later, Jonas finds out Gabriel is going to be released so, Jonas takes him and leaves the community. Days had gone by and the searchers had stopped looking, but hunger and hope became a problem. All was lost until Jonas heard what he knew to be music, "but perhaps it was an echo".

★Favorite Quote★

"Things could change, Gabe. Things could be different. I don't know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents. And everybody would have memories. You know about memories....Gabe, there could be love..." -Jonas

★Teacher-like Questions★

  • Why would the author of the novel allow so many changes in the movie of the Giver?
  • Will there be movies of the other books? If so, would they be considered sequels/prequels to the first one?
  • Will Jonas and Gabriel survive their despair and possibly run into Rosemary along the way of their escape?

★Overall Rating★

To be honest, I was a little confused when starting the book. Although as the story went on, I started to get into it and wanted to see what would happen next. Especially, since the book ended on such a 'to be continued' type of moment. So, it was pretty interesting and hopefully, if I can get a look at a the other books, I wish to read on.
