Great Things Going On In Third Grade
Happy October! Fall is officially here and third grade is in full swing!
In Math, we will begin our study of fractions. Students will learn about fractions. They will learn that a fraction is part of a whole. Students will be introduced to equivalent fractions. Students will need to look at fractional models and compare equivalent fractions. Students will also learn how to order fractions on a number line. Fractions are a difficult concept for third graders to grasp. Please find opportunities to work with your child in everyday situations to look at fractions. Here are some examples:
If you have 1/2 of a Hershey's bar and your child has 6/12 of a Hershey's bar, do you have the same amount? Why?
If you order a pizza and there are 8 pieces, how many pieces would be half? Is 1/2 equal to 4/8? Why? Is 6 pieces, or 6/8 of the pizza larger than 1/2 of the pizza?

In Reading and Writing, students will learn about playful language. Students will explore similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration and idioms. They will also incorporate examples of their playful language into their writing narrative. Students will work to complete their writing narrative this week.
We have began our study of Matter in Science. Students are enjoying working in their ELM groups to research and complete experiments on matter. Please see our attached ELM team plan and challenge over our matter unit.
