NEW!!! Principal's Message
Hope everyone is taking care and enjoying those few sunny and beautiful days we have recently had. These couple of weeks have been busy and filled with excitement. We started our PRIDE classes which offer students choice on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Our classes range from exploring the world with Legos, talking statistics as we discuss NBA games, provide movement with futsal and volleyball, and many other engaging classes.
Next week we will have our Conferences where you will be meeting CMS teachers and having an opportunity to discuss your students progress in school. This week, if you have not already done so, you will receive information from your student's team on this year's conferences format. They will all be virtual and you will receive information on how to set up appointments with your student's teacher.
This start of the school we have been focusing on care and connection with our students. During community class in the month of October we are focusing on Leadership and Friendship. We encourage our students to be leaders by:
- Inviting new and different people to sit with them at lunch.
- If you see something wrong happening at school reporting it (discreetly if needed).
- Smiling and talking to someone new (remember many kids are in the same boat as far as wanting to make new friends and connections too).
We also ask:
- What other ideas do you have to help make and keep CMS a great place?
We all want CMS to be the best place it can be so hopefully if we all work together to be welcoming and kind to each other then we can have an amazing school climate where everyone can thrive and be happy!
We would appreciate it if you could spend some time with your student talking about CMS and how we can make it the best place to make friends and learn. We will continue to discuss with students on how to be leaders in our community and teach students how to be responsible and safe students at school.
One last comment: at the end of every day we provide free breakfast bags for students to take home. There have been instances of students opening those bags before they get home and they are left behind in our parking lots, in the streets of our community and in the bus. Please discuss this with your student and support our message of keeping the breakfast items in the bags provided until they arrive home. This will make a huge difference and we discuss this every day at school with students as well.
Thank you all for your ongoing support to make CMS such an amazing place to be at.
Kind regards,
Johanna

Purpose of AVID Binder
What is AVID:
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach.
What is the purpose of the AVID binder?
Organization is an important skill in school, career and other aspects of daily life. The AVID binder is an organizational tool to help students maintain notes and school work in one place. Students are expected to maintain a binder, which has been provided to them along with most of the necessary items needed. They are expected to keep it organized using the rubric they have reviewed during PRIDE.
There will be a weekly Binder Check to support students keeping their binder organized and ensure they have all of their materials needed for class. Students should spend no more than 20 minutes each day organizing and completing their notes.
How can I support my child at home?
Regularly check your child’s backpack and AVID Binder. All papers should be placed in the binder rings in the proper class section. Remove unnecessary papers. We encourage you to reference the attached checklist/rubric.
What should be in the AVID Binder?
Binders must be good quality 2 1/2-inch/3-inch three-ring binder with pocket inserts.
Provided binder contents
* Subject dividers to separate each academic class
* Pencil pouch to store supplies
*Pen or Pencil
* One or more highlighters
*1 Spiral Notebook for each of these classes Health, ELA, Science, Social Studies, Math
