Principal's Message
WMS Family,
Short weeks always seem to make for the longest weeks! However, we are rolling along here at campus. Several of our athletic teams have begun competition and it is great to see our young people competing. Parent support has been excellent for all events. Also, several of our campus clubs and organizations are getting up a running. Our goal here is to have each student tied into some activity on the WMS campus.
One issue that we are having on campus is students failing to get their temporary ID for the day, and other students failing to keep their ID visible all day. Beginning next week, if a student fails to get their temporary ID in the morning, they will be assigned an after school detention. In addition, if a student is seen in the hallways with their ID not visible (in their pocket, backpack, or inside of their shirt) they will also receive an after school detention. Having every person in the building wearing an ID badge is just one of the ways that we maintain campus security and teach student responsibility. ID badges, along with no cell phones and tardies, will be a hard focus for the entire school year.
I am so proud of our ELITE teacher attendance thus far this school year! On Tuesday, our teacher attendance was 100%. Not only are WMS teachers making every effort to be here each day for your children, they are here with ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, ENCOURAGEMENT and great buy-in for our campus culture shift. Our teachers being present each day is paramount to classroom success for our students. If you happen to see a WMS teacher, please give them a high-five and a thank you; they more than deserve it!

ID Badge Push
Beginning on Monday we will be pushing a littler harder in regards to our ID Badge policy. The below stipulations will be addressed to each grade during grade level meetings (Monday-8th grade, Tuesday-7th grade, & Wednesday-6th grade). We appreciate you help in reviewing the below consequences with you student.
-Students that fail to get a needed temporary ID badge before arriving to 1st period will automatically receive an after school d-hall.
-Students that are seen throughout the school day with their ID badge in their pocket, backpack, or under their shirt will automatically receive an after school d-hall.
-Any students that attempt to wear a temporary ID badge that reflects a previous date, will automatically receive an after school detention.
Thank you all for your support!
Open House

7th & 8th Grade Open House: Wednesday, October 2nd, 6:00-7:30

Crosswalk Safety
If your student is a walker or bike rider, please remind them that they need to always cross at the designated crosswalks. All bike riders should walk, not ride, their bikes across any road or driveway. With the heavy traffic that we have around our campus at arrival and dismissal, it is always a great idea to have your bike rider wear a helmet.

PSAT Update
Dear 8th Grade Parents/ Guardians,
All eighth grade students enrolled in a Humble ISD schools will be taking the PSAT 8/9 test on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
What is the PSAT 8/9 Test?
The PSAT 8/9 is the first in the College Board’s “SAT Suite of Assessments” and is offered to eighth and ninth graders. The purpose of the PSAT 8/9 is to establish a starting point in terms of college and career readiness as students transition to high school. It’s a way for students to practice for the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT. The test is multiple choice and is timed. The test will be administered on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
The PSAT 8/9, like the PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT, has three testing areas: Reading (55 minutes), Writing and Language (30 Minutes), and Math (No calculator section= 20 minutes and Calculator Section= 40 minutes). WMS will provide calculators for students on test day. Each test assesses the academic skills that students have developed over the years, primarily through their course work. These skills are considered essential for success in high school

Math Updates
- Ensure they know their math facts! Practice memorization of multiplication tables. It's extremely difficult to build students as proportional thinkers without multiplication. Feel free to use old school flash cards or find an APP for that! Google Play and Apple's App Store have plenty for multiplication facts!
- Encourage students to attend tutorials on a regular basis. Tutorials are not just for struggling students. Tutorials are a great resource for just extra practice and a place to do your homework (with your teacher there, just in case!)
- Use an online resource for seeing concepts again! MathAntics is a favorite and an easy watch! Check out https://www.mathantics.com/ for many topics! Important topics now would be: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios and Proportions, and Integer Arthimetic!
We look forward to continuing to build up strong mathematicians this 2019-20 school year!

IHELP
Humble ISD’s iHelp app is a comprehensive reporting solution designed for the needs, behaviors, and attitudes of students; it is easy to use and allows students to remain anonymous. This technology fosters a relationship between schools, law enforcement, counselors, parents, and students. It is also available, free of charge, to all parents and guardians through Apple or Google Play.
Reports are monitored 24/7 to ensure time-sensitive matters are dealt with promptly. When a student uses the app, they are notified when action has been taken on their report. This indicates that their time and concern are valued. The student reporting can attach photos, documents, screenshots, videos, or audio recordings, and can engage in two-way dialogue with a real person. Both features facilitate swift interventions.Students can share information on any type of danger that may threaten their safety or the safety of others. Please encourage your student to use this life saving technology for the wellbeing of all our children.

A Note From the Nurse
- A temperature of 100 degrees or more in the last 24 hours (please report flu-like symptoms, confirmed flu or strep)
- Vomited the night before or the morning of school
- Diarrhea the night before or the morning of school
- a persistent cough
- a Continually runny nose with white, green or yellow mucus
- Eyes that appear red and weeping
- a rash of unknown cause anywhere on the body
- Try to drink at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of pure, clean water every day ·
- Make drinking water a daily habit. When it’s hot out or you’re ill, take in even more water—two to three glasses more than usual.
- To increase your fluid intake, enjoy a few pieces of fruit a day ·
- Breakfast is considered an important meal because it breaks the overnight fasting period, replenishes your supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.
All medicine MUST be brought to the clinic by an adult with the appropriate medication form. Some chronic conditions require a completed packet that includes a medical plan. The forms can be found on the Nurse’s web page in the Helpful Documents tab or can be filled out at the clinic when dropping off medication. PLEASE do not place medicine in a child’s backpack as this can be a life threatening mistake. The district medication guidelines are very specific and can be located on the district website in the student/parent handbook.
Immunization documentation is not negotiable. Humble ISD must be in compliance with Texas Law. Please respond promptly when notified of immunization discrepancies so that children do not miss any educational time. We realize that this can be a time consuming errand; however, we must show documentation to the state, when requested, regarding our students’ health records for everyone’s safety.
