Court Vocabulary

Plaintiff: Person bringing case against another in court of law.

Defendant: Person or entity being accused of such crime.

Complaint: A statement that a situation is unsatisfactory or unacceptable.

Summons: Being called to court in such that you have information.

Pleadings: A formal statement of the cause of an action or defense.

Pre-Trial Conference: The meeting of the parties to a case conducted prior to trial.

Mediation: The intervention in a dispute in order to resolve it.

Arbitration: Using an arbitrator to settle a dispute.

Verdict: a decision on a disputed issue in a civil or criminal case or an inquest.

Appeal: To apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court.

Trial: A formal examination of evidence before a judge.

Preponderance of Evidence: A standard of proof that must be met by plaintiff if he or she wants to win a civil action.
