This week in 7th grade ELA we began our new Dystopian unit. During this unit, students will get to create their own world with chaos, a hero and a villain. Our reading for this unit will be the famous short story The Lottery and the novel The Giver. This has been a much loved book and unit in the past because it gives kids a chance to think about and write with extreme creativity. Dystopian novels like The Hunger Games and Divergent series are a huge hit with many young adults right now and for this unit they will be writing their own Dystopian short stories. We also reviewed word usage this week in grammar and learned new tricks to remember the different forms of a word. We also enhanced our vocabulary by keeping a running log of words that students will see throughout the unit. For this unit we have a new style of book reports and will be creating ‘book bags’! These book bags will begin to be created in about 5 weeks, up until that point students have chosen a free reading book that they need to read. Please encourage your child to be getting in a few nights of free reading this month! Have a fantastic weekend!

Pre Algebra began work on Module 3 this week - Proportional and Nonproportional Relationships and Functions. These new concepts contain some skills the students already have used in the past but several new concepts and skills. As I will be checking in with the students in class, please check-in with them at home to make sure they are feeling confident working with the new material. If they don’t feel completely comfortable please remind them to ask me for help and clarification so we can get them on the right track as soon as possible. Have a great weekend! Mrs. Seitz
Algebra worked on equations with two variables. We also worked with functions and function notation. We ended the week with taking a look at explicit and recursive functions. We will spend more time of these functions next week. On Tuesday of next week we will begin reviewing for the next unit test. There will be a pretest on Wednesday and the test will be next week Thursday and Friday. Please encourage your son or daughter to use the pretest to help them study for the test. The end of the first trimester is approaching fast. Encourage your son or daughter to complete any late or absent work they may have. Have a great weekend.

We have been working hard on our cell city projects. This project is used to model the cell organelles using analogies. Students will wrap their projects up on Tuesday, Nov. 8th. A microscope activity was also done to compare and contrast plant and animal cells. We looked at onion cells that students stained with iodine in order to see the cell wall, cytoplasm and nucleus. Students also used their own cheek cells, stained them and viewed those under the microscope as well. These were a little more difficult to see but students still did a great job using the microscopes and focusing in on the cells. We also played “Kahoot It” a couple times to review for the cell organelle function quiz that we took to finish off the week. Next week, we will finish off the last section of the chapter that explains how organisms are organized from cells all the way to organisms.
Have a very nice weekend!

This week in U.S History we finished Chapter 11 and completed the test over the material we covered. Overall it was easy to tell the students who took the time and worked on the essay question ahead of time. For the rest of the week, and most of next week we will be completing a stocks and bonds simulation. Students will become investors and get to buy and sell stocks with the goal of making as much money as they can. To help keep the students organized we will use a google spreadsheet to keep track of the money they earned. Students will be scored on how well they answer the discussion questions throughout the simulation on the Schoology website. On a side note we would like to invite all families to our Veterans day program at Yorkville School on Friday November 11th at 9:45. Have a great weekend.

Students this week continued to learn Spanish numbers 0-100. We have made it to one hundred and are now working on practicing our speaking and writing skills. Students completed a variety of activities and games, like "Smack the number" game, partner writing activity and Quizizz technology game. We finished by doing a number scavenger hunt throughout the class. Next week, we will take a break from working with numbers and celebrate "Los Días de los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead."

This week in health the 7th graders worked on inspirational Canva posters that coincide with their SMART goals. They were also able to have the opportunity to watch their Unintentional Injury Newscasts.
This week in PE the students participated in a 2 on 2 double elimination Basketball Tournament. There were two brackets for each class to keep things moving. It was fun watching the students work with their partners and try so hard to advance. We also played Cricket on Friday!
Have a spectacular weekend!
