Dear Members of the Nazareth College Catholic Community,
I pray that this message finds you well at home with your families as we begin to enter into what will be the new normal for a bit. In times of such uncertainty, we have the gift of being able to turn to our Catholic tradition for comfort, guidance and perspective. In the Creed we pray each Sunday at Mass, we recite the words “we believe in “one catholic and apostolic church”. The meaning of the word catholic is universal. As a universal tradition we believe that while we are many, we are also one. We are reminded that despite the physical distance we are always bonded in spiritual communion.
As we move through the days and weeks ahead, I invite you to turn to your Catholic tradition for support. I am asking each of us to pray every day the Thomas Merton prayer that is found on our community prayer card:
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
As you reflect on these words, may they remind you that in this time of fear and uncertainty you are not alone – there is a community around you and God’s Grace sustains you. This time of social distancing can be used as an opportunity to become more connected with yourself and our world. Below you find a series of retreat offerings by the Center for Spirituality. These offerings are centered around themes designed to help you find clarity and insight during these times of ambiguity. Additionally, we will be hosting opportunities to connect as a community for prayer and reflection in the weeks ahead.
Meanwhile, if you need anything please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know. Please see information on a weekly Chaplain chat and a form to schedule a one-on-one appointment below. As we continue our Lenten journey, please know you are each in my prayers. You are missed, you are loved, you are not alone.
Peace and prayers,
~ Jamie
