Industrialization

Political-

Manifest Destiny was what caused the rush of people moving westward. We started as small colonies and quickly grew into a self governing civilization. For this fact I am extremely proud that we were able to achieve this rapid growth. Without Manifest Destiny, we would not have expanded and grown as a nation.

Economic-

The completion of the Central pacific railroad provided jobs for millions of people. Not only did it open up new job opportunities, but many of people's income came from working on finishing the railroad. This is a great economic achievement because it helped America grow. This is something to be proud of as an American.

Social/Cultural-

With manifest destiny and moving west came the assimilation of Native Americans into the western culture. It was a time where we forced Native Americans to change their culture and give up their way of life. This is something I am ashamed of as an American. Because of this the Native American culture was almost destroyed. We eradicated their controversial style of living that could have been used to benefit our society.

Immigration

Political-

During the time of immigration, political bosses took advantage of poor immigrants. They would give them a place to live in exchange for their vote in the upcoming election. This would result in an unfair polling and lead to the political bosses candidate being chosen. Once this happened that specific part of government would be under their control. I am ashamed of these crimes, yet relieved that these immigrants at least had a place to live.

Immigrants, Politics, and Political Machines
Economic-

The Chinese Exclusion Act stated that immigrants from China were prohibited to enter the US. This is something I am ashamed of. Not only was it discriminating against a certain race, but it hurt America economically, because jobs that were usually filled by chinese immigrants were left empty, leaving the US with a need for employees.

Social/Cultural-

Due to the large amount of immigrants flooding America, the US was the first place to be referred to as the "melting pot." There were hundreds of different ethnicities moving to America, resulting in a more culturally diverse place. I'm am proud to support the actions taken by the US in order to keep immigration flow going.

Urbanization

Political-

A.F of L, or the American Federation of Labor was passed in hopes to improve the work environments of thousands of working families throughout the largest booming cities in America. I am proud of this Federation for successfully winning the rights to better working conditions. It benefitted people's lives greatly and was a huge accomplishment for the U.S. It was also won by the people, and long overdue, for they had been trying all possible means to have their voices be heard.

Economic-

Sherman Antitrust Act made monopolies illegal in America. This impacted America's economy and how businesses were run from then on. No longer did people have soul power over an industry. It was now fair game for everyone. In all this is something to be proud of because it created a fair working environment for everyone.

Social/Political-

Tenement housing is where many working families resided during the urbanization period. They were almost forced to live there because it was the closest place to their work. This resulted in a cultural shift, going from large families who lived far away from each other to small families living within close proximity to each other. This also lead to the spread of many diseases, and for that I am ashamed that something wasn't done sooner to improve the lives of these people.

Progressivism

Political-

During the age of Progressivism, American won the right for women to vote. This law was passed after many organizations had been fighting for it for years. I am proud of this accomplishment because it provided women of the time a voice. Women would not have the right to vote today if this had not occurred.

Economic-

Captains of Industry got rich off of hard working people and monopolized industries. These robber barons were unjust and unfair to their competition, and for this I am ashamed that they were allowed to continue their work for so long. It affected the economy greatly because a certain field of business was run by one main power.

Big image
Social/Cultural- Due to everyone in the family working, buildings called Tenements were created to support these families. They were convenient because of the proximity to the residence's work. These houses resulted in a shift in culture. At times there would be multiple families living in a small tenement house. I am ashamed that these people had to live in such poor houses. These houses caused diseases to spread rather quickly resulting in many deaths.

Imperialism

Political-

The Teller and Platt Amendments served the US to secure our hold on the panama canal. America had to come up with a way to stay involved in Panama's affairs without coming off as controlling, so the Teller and Platt Amendments were created. This benefitted the United states and was a great political achievement, so I am proud of these things.

American Imperialism: The Platt Amendment
Economic- The Open Door Policy was created to ensure America's steady trade with China. With this policy in place, the US continued on trading with China and increasing their profit by doing so. I am proud of this decision made by the United States of America. In the end it benefitted our economy greatly.

Social/Cultural-

Yellow Journalism was created in the hopes of persuading Americans to believe or think a certain way. It was a new type of news that wasn't 100% reliable. This impacted the decisions made by America henceforth. I am ashamed this was allowed to go on, because it was initially lying to the public and feeding them false information. This lead to people being wrongly educated about what current events were.

World War I

Political-

The Fourteen Points in the speech were based on the research of the inquiry, a team of about 150 advisers led by foreign-policy adviser Edward M. House, into the topics likely to erect in the anticipated peace conference. I am proud of these points made by the president, because they acted as a sort of peace treaty.

Economic-

The violation of the Sussex Pledge led to a slump in America. We were unable to trade with any of Europe because of this, which negatively affected our economy. Many jobs were lost for a while as well. I am ashamed that these events occurred and the repercussions for them.

Social/Cultural

The Food and Fuel Control Act of 1917 helped control America's money so they would be able to fund World War I. This resulted in a serious change in everyday life for Americans. The way people bought their food and supplies changed drastically. Despite the harsh transition, it was a beneficial move, and for that I am proud of this act.
