Tips for Kindergarten Parents
The beginning of BIG school can be a little emotional for our students and parents. Here are a few tips on how YOU can support your child as they transition to BIG school:
- Practice eating "school lunch". Make sure they know how to open a milk carton or any item you may send that will need to be opened. Our little kiddos will be responsible for carrying their tray so have them practice carrying their plate to the table at home. It's also important to tell them to not eat off the table and to use utensils.
- Lunch time goes by quickly so practice setting a timer for 20 minutes and talk about how they may not finish eating and that's okay. Practice packing everything back up and talk about what is trash and what should come back home if they bring a lunch box from home. Kindergarten lunch is a big adjustment and your child's kindergarten teacher will be super appreciative if you have helped prepare them for this experience.
- Start your school routine NOW. Summer days may have your little one staying up late and sleeping in. Go ahead and start the night time routine beginning at 8:00 PM and setting the alarm for 7:00 AM. Adjusting now will be helpful so you are not dealing with a grumpy kindergartener on the first few days of school.
- It's important to start the first day with the day to day structure of kindergarten. For this reason we ask parents to NOT walk their child to their classroom on the first day of school. It's important for our students to learn the arrival process and walking to the classroom independently. Don't worry, we will have staff throughout the hallways assisting our little cubs.
- If your child is going to be a bus rider, they need to be a bus rider the first day of school. I know you want to be with them on their first day of school, but it is important to start their first day consistent with their daily mode of transportation.
- The first day of school is a special milestone for your child, but it is just as special for you, the parents. So, take those pictures at the bus stop or before they leave that morning. This will be the picture you look back on in 13 short years when they leave the house on the first day of their senior year.
Take a deep breath and savor this special time. We are here to make sure your child's first days of kindergarten are the BEST!
