Math Recovery
A Year of Small Steps - Weeks 28-30
Brand new bundles of joy!
This time of year is full of interruptions: safety drills, spring events, testing, and more testing. It's the perfect time to skillfully use Math Recovery aligned games that are already differentiated! We have added a new folder to our shared Google drive in miPLACE with a plethora of game bundles. Each game board has guidance on the targeted skill or level, for instance: 10+, 5+, doubles, etc. making it super easy to match the gameboard with the students' cutting edge of instruction or appropriate, independent practice level. I love the idea of using the same game with a variety of students and only having to explain the rules once. It also allows me to quickly change the complexity of the game without teaching a new task. Most of the games only require a gameboard & some dice, so you get up to 16 versions per game with very little prep work.
Don't forget to help students consolidate their knowledge by asking metacognitive questions toward the end of a game session. They may need help to explicitly understand how the game is connected to the big ideas of number sense and how they might use their newly sharpened skills outside of school.
Here are the exact folder names:
Click on the Google Drive icon on our miPLACE Math Recovery group page
miPLACE Math Recovery >> Instruction >> Games & Card Sets >> Game Bundles
Please, please, please, access the files through miPLACE
or use "Add to my drive", DO NOT move anything into a Team Drive.
That causes the group to lose access and it's impossible to undo.
Jump to It: Froggy Page Numbers
Here's another super quick math in the moment routine. Instead of asking students to turn to a particular page in their book, challenge them to JUMP to it:
- Jump to page 30, add 10, subtract 1. Hold it up when you find the page.
- How many pages in your book? Jump to half that.
- Jump to page 35, add 5, double it. Where are you?
- Jump to page 60, I'm on page 100. How many pages are in between? Or how many pages for you to jump to 100?
What's in the bucket, bag & box?
