High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
Week of August 30, 2021
WELCOME BACK!!!!!
It was a great, full, first week of school for all of our Golden Eagles! Our students and staff are getting back into their routines and the building is alive again with the buzz of activity! We were excited to welcome our families back into the building this week for Curriculum Night on Wednesday. If you were unable to attend, please check out each teacher's Schoology page for important information about your son or daughter's courses.
Each week our high school sends out a newsletter to update parents with important information. Included will be announcements, events, opportunities for students and more. Please check it out each week.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.
A Few Reminders from our Front Office
Please remember, if your student is going to be absent, running late, or needs to leave early please call the attendance line ahead of time and leave a message at 740-965-7776.
Additionally, to minimize traffic in the main office, please do not come in to get your student unless otherwise instructed. We are asking that parents/guardians call or provide a note ahead of time giving the student permission to sign themselves out and meet you outside in the loop. No student may leave early unless a parent/guardian has given permission. Even if your student is 18, they must have prior approval from a parent or guardian.
Finally, if parents need to drop off any items, please leave them on the table just inside the first secure door of our main entrance. There are post-it notes and pens available for you to label items. Please text your student to let them know their items are there. Students will be able to pick up their items in between classes. We will not be calling students out of class for dropped off items unless it is an urgent matter.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
BWHS Arrival Information
The high school doors will open each morning at 7:15 a.m. Please do not enter the building before that time. When students arrive, they will need to report directly to their first period class. Any student who needs breakfast will go directly to the cafeteria, eat there, and then report to class. Food will not be allowed outside the cafeteria.
First period begins promptly at 7:40 a.m.
BWHS Academic Boosters
Academic Boosters - who are we? We are a group of organized parents who provide support to help improve the academic experience for all students, parents, and staff at BWHS. We provide An Evening of Excellence in September to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned a 3.5 GPA the previous year. We sponsor the annual Academic and Military Signing in the spring for graduating seniors who have been offered college scholarships and graduating seniors who have enlisted in Military Services. Students who earn a 5 on their AP exam receive a High Five yard sign provided by and delivered to their home by members of the Academic Boosters. Our staff at BWHS is crucial to the success of our students and the academic booster parents show them just how much we appreciate them by providing a few very small tokens of appreciation during staff appreciation week in April. We have many other ideas of ways we can expand and continue to support the academic efforts of our students and staff! We are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
Meetings are typically at 6:30pm on the second Monday of each month. (No December meeting.)
This year, our meetings are as follows: 9/14*, 10/11, 11/8, 1/10, 2/15*, 3/14, 4/11, 5/9.
*Please note 9/14 and 2/15 are Tuesdays.

A Message from our SRO
Assistant Superintendent, Mark Cooper, speaks to students in Financial Literacy
about job hiring and filling out tax forms!
Breakfast and Lunch is Again Free for All Students, Provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
The USDA has extended the waiver allowing ALL STUDENTS to receive daily FREE breakfast and FREE lunch for the 2021-2022 school year, regardless if they qualify for free/reduced meal status.
If you believe you qualify for free/reduced meal benefits, it is very important that you still complete a Free and Reduced Price Meal application because the eligibility status from the Free and Reduced Price Meal application is one of the factors used for waiving or reducing school fees and pay-to-participate fees. Even though all students are temporarily receiving free breakfast and free lunch, fees may only be waived if you qualify based on the Free and Reduced Price Meal application, and you completed the form. Additionally, eligibility for P-EBT benefits can only be determined based on the Free and Reduced Price Meal application. A la carte items or extras are sold at current pricing. Please apply money to your student's lunch account for these items by going to www.payschoolscentral.com. To read the full notice on Free and Reduced eligibility, and to access the Free and Reduced Price Meal application, visit the Food Service page of our website. Contact Linda Klamfoth at lindaklamfoth@bwls.net or (740) 965-8958 with any questions.
