PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Dear Families,
I hope the coming weeks provide you the opportunity to get the rest, relaxation and rejuvenation you need and deserve. It has been a challenging year for many people and most of what has been challenging will still be with us in 2021 but I’m ready to turn the calendar on 2020.
Last night the Southeast Guiding Coalition settled on a recommendation to Superintendent Guerrero for the Kellogg Middle School feeder pattern. Sometime soon you will be receiving information from PPS about the recommendation and what the next steps in the process will be, but in the meantime I can share some information. The recommendation includes Arleta School becoming a K-5 school starting in the fall of 2021-2022 (next fall) with our 6-8th graders going to the new Kellogg Middle School. For more details about the recommendation you can go to this link. SEGC Recommendation to Superintendent Please join me in thanking Sarah Kincaid and Sondra Blair for superbly representing Arleta families on the Southeast Guiding Coalition. They participated in MANY hours of meetings and document review.
Finally, thanks to Phillip Pennington, one of our PE teachers, and the local Les Schwab Tire Centers for securing yoga mats for all of our 6-8 grade students. Les Schwab donated and delivered 200 yoga mats to us because of Phillip’s advocacy. It’s a wonderful donation and we are very thankful to Les Schwab.
Have a wonderful Winter Break.

MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT GUERRERO
Español | Tiếng Việt | 中文 | Русский | Soomaali
Dear PPS Families and Colleagues,
I hope that you, your students and those around you, find opportunities to restore, laugh, and find joy during this winter break. The year 2020 has been a challenge for all of us, both individually and as a community.
Thank you to our educators, counselors, social workers, administrators, secretaries, nutrition workers, bus drivers, custodians, and many other colleagues, including volunteers and community partners, for their dedication during this unprecedented time to support the children, youth, and families of PPS.
And thank you to our families for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate the challenges in front of us. We are grateful for the support and encouragement you provide your children every day.
Everywhere there are examples of resilience and perseverance in our community. I invite you to listen to a special song (below), recorded by our students from Cleveland High School. It reminds us of the importance of compassion and caring for one another during this difficult time.
With gratitude, hope and optimism, I look forward to seeing our students and educators soon.
Wishing you and your family a warm, safe, and happy holiday.
Guadalupe Guerrero

Did you know?
Kwanzaa is a winter holiday that honors African heritage and is celebrated between December 26 and January 1. It is a celebration inspired by traditional African harvest festival customs and focuses on building family tradition, culture, and community. It's all about family togetherness, learning about family roots, and celebrating cultural history.
The word Kwanzaa (sometimes spelled "Kwanza") comes from Swahili and means "harvest" or "first fruits."
LIBRARY BOOK DISTRIBUTION RESUMES JAN. 6TH
Ms. Street will resume library book distribution after Winter Break, on Jan. 6, 2 to 5pm. Enjoy reading during the break!
WHEN RETURNING YOUR BOOKS, PLEASE DROP OFF EXTRA CLEAN, REUSABLE/CLOTH GROCERY BAGS SO WE CAN SAVE MONEY FROM PURCHASING NEW BAGS.
CONFIRM YOUR CONTACT INFO IN PARENTVUE
At the beginning of each year we give families the chance to update their contact information with our Yearly Verification forms. This year that process moved online and was available on ParentVUE. However, the deadline for making updates via ParentVUE has passed. If you updated your information on ParentVUE or if you are new to Arleta this year, you are all set. If families have not already verified student information on ParentVUE, ParentVUE will not allow you to log on until we confirm contact information for your student and family. If you can log on to ParentVUE you’re all good.
If you need to update or confirm your contact information and/or if you need assistance to login to ParentVUE, please reach out to School Secretary Nicole Francois at nfrancois@pps.net or call Arleta school at 503-916-6330 and leave a call back number. Nicole will get back to you quickly. It will only take a moment to confirm that we have accurate contact and emergency numbers for your student and to get you logged on to ParentVUE.
ParentVUE is a secure website and mobile app which offers parents, guardians real time access to:

PPS & COMMUNITY RESOURCES
RESOURCE FOR COPING DURING COVID-19
With COVID-19 continuing to ravage our county, and schools continuing to engage in comprehensive distance learning, a new toolkit was created by Multnomah County students, parents and public health communicators to empower youth and families to cope during the pandemic: Taking Care of Ourselves and Others: A COVID-19 Guide for Youth and Families.
It includes tips on dealing with peer pressure, conversation starters for family members who may not be following COVID-19 precautions, information on where and how to get tested, mental and physical health resources as well as strategies for safer socializing
and general prevention guidelines.
FREE MEDICAL CARE
If your child is currently in need of medical services or shots and you aren't sure where to go, Multnomah County Student Health Centers are open at Benson (for PPS students aged 7-21), as well as at David Douglas, Parkrose, and Roosevelt high schools (for all K-12 Multnomah county students) for in-person health services like immunizations as well as mental health counseling, while schools are engaged in distance learning. Phone and video appointments are also available. Any qualifying youth can access care and there are no out of pocket costs.
