JUST RUN
Skippers Run 2019
JUST RUN Week 1
This week we will kick off the 2019 season of JUST RUN! We are very excited to set (and crush) some personal goals! The first practice will be on Tuesday and much of it will be spent setting goals, learning rules and routines of Just Run and having a light practice. (Learning the purpose of a dynamic warm up, a short instructed run, a cool down and a stretch)
This will be the basic flow of every practice. You can help your child practice at home. Below is a basic outline of what we will be doing in practice that can be replicated at home. Parents are encouraged to run / walk with their child and to join us for the race day! If you have never run before, it might seem like a challenge, but you CAN do it!
Right now it looks like Tuesday will be sunny and 36 degrees and Thursday will be Cloudy (or slight drizze) and 62 degrees. If that forecast holds true we will be running outside for at least a portion of the practice. Please plan accordingly.
Your child may want to bring a water bottle (PLEASE BE SURE TO LABEL With FIRST AND LAST NAME) If not, there are water fountains available at the school.
I recommend sending your child with a light snack, they will have time before practice to eat something.
High School and Middle School Students
It is expected that ALL high school and middle school students travel straight to McKinley when school is dismissed. Check in at the main office NO LATER THAN 3:15.
HOW TO TRAIN WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME- Weeks 1 and 2
Plan To: Run/walk twice a week for the next two weeks for 30 minutes each time.
Warm Up: Always warm up for 5-7 minutes before beginning each training session. Walk for a few minutes, then do some fun moves to warm up your muscles.
A few ideas: Walk, hiking your knees up toward your chest; do squats; march like a soldier, keeping your arms and legs straight and lifting them alternately (Frankensteins); skip, kid-style; do butt-kicks; bunny-hop, taking small jumps forward with your feet together.
Running Intervals: Alternate walking and jogging at a slow pace. Jog for 2-3 minutes, then walk for 1 minute to recover. Repeat for 30 minutes.
