The Coral Reefs Are Disapearing
The Coral Reefs
Coral Reefs are gigantic ecosystems of marine life including tropical fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and etc. Coral reefs support 25% of all the fish in the world. 75% of coral reefs are threatened. By the time of 2050, 50% of the coral reefs will be wiped out. Did you know that oil spills over the years have destroyed 45% of the coral reefs there used to be? That's right, humans over time have destroyed 85% of coral reefs. Fishing boats can also destroy sea life. For example, the fastest fish in the ocean (the sail fish) has cut down its population by the triple digits due to sport fishing. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world and kept in good condition because it is a popular tourist sight. But, there is hope! More limits on fishing and more secure oil tankers will come, and more people will realize this wonderful masterpiece may not be here for our children to enjoy. Daniel and I both beleive that we all should feel this way about coral reefs.
