November 2017
Guidance Topics
This month during counselor time, we will be spending time on discussing multiculturalism and anti-victimization. For multiculturalism we will focus on accepting others, how having 2 different perceptions is ok, and finding pride in our own personal cultures. You can help at home by sharing with your child about your culture and what is important to you. For anti-victimization, we will follow a Plano ISD approved curriculum that is age appropriate to teach kids how to keep themselves safe. You may follow up with your student with reviewing family rules that you have to keep your kids safe at home.
Mrs. Whitwell's Book of the Month
We're All Wonders
We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio, is a children's book based off of a chapter book called Wonder. This children's book encourages students to look on the inside for their confidence and self-worth reminding them that we are all wonders in this world each with our own purpose. The movie Wonder staring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay is coming to theaters this month on November 17th. If you choose to see the movie with your students or read the books, I recommend that you use it as an opportunity to talk to your child about how their unique qualities make a difference in this world. I would also recommend having a conversation with your child about how to treats others who are different than them.
Be Kind Challenge
This year, the counseling department will be encouraging students to show kindness. Every week there will be a challenge posted by the counselor door and on the Kindness bulletin board in the main hallway towards the cafeteria. An example of the challenge is, "Compliment a Classmate". Once a student has participated in the challenge, they may fill out a BE KIND card and bring to the counselor's office. The student will then receive recogintion with their kind act posted on the bulletin board plus receive a colt cash from the counselor. The student can participate in the challenge as many times as he or she wants and the challenge will change weekly.
Let's Be Kind!
Kindness Questions to ask your Student
1. How did you show kindness today? How are you going to show kindness tomorrow?
2. Who is new to you that you would like to become friends with? Why?
3. What is your goal for this year? How can I help you reach your goal?
4. How do you stay organized at school? Can I teach you things I do that helps me?
5. How did someone show you kindness today? How did it make you feel?
