What is an algal bloom?
An algal bloom is the rapid accumulation of algae in an aquatic system. They can occur in salt water and fresh water environments. Bright green blooms are caused by blue-green algae, known as cyanobacteria. Other micro-organisms can also cause red, green or yellowish-brown algal blooms.
