The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of December 4-8!
Message from the principal
Mr. Peterson was one of only two teachers to receive the Dr. Robert E. & Phyllis M. Yager Exemplary Teaching Recognition Award. It is presented each year to two teachers who went to the University of Northern Iowa and are now standing out for their current and past work as teachers. They are nominated by current teaching staff at UNI.
Dr. Yager is a nationally recognized leader in science education and an alumnus of UNI. He established the award with the idea of honoring UNI graduates who go on to excellence in teaching at the K-12 level in the state of Iowa.
Those who have had a chance to work with Mr. Peterson know that he is a very deserving recipient of this great honor for his terrific work as a band director and teacher leader for the past 22 years.
They held a special luncheon for him and the other recipient on Friday, December 1st, in the Great Reading Room in the building of the President's office at UNI where the university president, faculty members, friends, colleagues, and even Dr. Yager, were on hand to honor him.
Congratulations, Mr. Peterson!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

Student Announcements and Day 1/ Day 2 for the week
This week Monday, December 4th, is a Day 1. Tuesday is a Day 2, Block Days are a Day 1, and Friday is a Day 2.
UHS Counselor course and career planning on Naviance with students
scholarships, recommendation letters, and completing the FAFSA. Juniors also focused on courses for senior year by finalizing their 4-year plans.
In December, we will be working with freshmen and sophomores on Naviance as well. They will be working on their personal strengths as they relate to possible career pathways. They will also begin doing some college research and figuring out best matches in regard to college choice. We will focus on 4-year plans as well. Students will begin scheduling for next year right after winter break, so it will be very important for them to work hard on Naviance activities and the 4-year plan because we will upload these courses directly into PowerSchool to ease the scheduling process. Parents are encouraged to log on with their students to see the plans and the other tasks they have completed this fall. You can access Naviance by going to our website at www.uhsguidance.com and choosing the Naviance link under the column titled UHS Counseling Department Info.
As always, if there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor at UHS.

Building Opportunities - Urbandale CSD 2018 Bond Referendum Community Forum
The Urbandale Community School District will host a Community Forum on Monday, December 4, 2017, at 6:30pm in the Media Center at Urbandale High School.
The intent of this forum is to educate residents about the upcoming Bond Referendum Vote on February 6, 2018.
The proposed plan aligns with the strongest life cycle, educational adequacy, and cost-benefit ratio quantitative results, as well as supports the preferences shared by attendees of community facility planning meetings in the spring of 2017. The $59M Bond Referendum would provide funds to build two new elementary schools, build an addition to Webster Elementary or UHS as needed for enrollment growth, and accelerate the timeline for building a new high school fitness center. The plan optimizes school resources, creates equity throughout the district, enhances technology and security, and provides greater 21st century spaces and learning opportunities for all K-12 students.
