West Word
An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
We concluded a busy week and day today as we welcomed best selling author Jordan Sonnenblick to Middle School West. Mr. Sonnenblick talked with the students during two assemblies about the tremendous positive impact the written word has made upon his life, and how he basically owes everything he has to the love of books and reading. Starting with tales of his struggles with health and attention-deficit issues, he connected quickly with the audience members - who undoubtedly could see something of their own stories in his school escapades. Of course, he discussed tips and tricks for writing - but the larger message was about living a life of using one’s deepest gifts with a sense of kindness and social responsibility. Afterwards, there was a book signing and dessert party in the library. The visit culminated with a writer’s workshop for select students from all three grades during the last two periods of the day. A huge thank you to Mr. Sonnenblick and to Mrs. Piccione and Mrs. Monteleone for organizing this special event!
Today was also Wonka Day🍭 Middle School West's musical, Willie Wonka Jr., has arrived. A special THANK YOU goes out to our West Secretary and musical producer, Shannon Bricker, along with the Bricker Family and the many other staff and volunteers who have helped make this weekend's performances of Willy Wonka Jr. possible. Everyone's dedication and hard work has certainly paid off. Best of luck this weekend as we're all in for a real treat! Please see pics below of the Wonka Jr. cast and more information below about the event.

PVSD Foundation Dodgeball TournamentThe PVSD Foundation held its 13th Annual DodgeballTournament on Saturday, March 4th at the high school. The popular event benefits the foundation, which provides teachers with grants that are used to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for our students. West was well represented by eighteen teams including Designated Hitters, East West Beasts, Gym Class Heroes, PV Kings, Snoop Dodgers, Straight Outta Skippack, and The Bosses in the Middle Division bracket. Ball of Duty, Breaking Balls, Dodge Daddies, Fortnighters, Meatballers, Pink Princesses, Snoop Doggy Dodge, Team Kevin, The Raptors, Untouchaballs, and Viking Ballers participated in the Major Division bracket. Congratulations to our Viking Ballers who took second place in the tournament this year and thank you to all who came out to support this worthy cause! | Glow DanceA glow dance is a visually spectacular event involving a range of bright, colorful, neon colored decorations, costumes, and face paint that glow under UV black lights, turning the dance floor into a whirlwind of color! West held its first Glow Dance, sponsored by our amazing Home and School Association, on Friday, March 6th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM! Students from all three grades were invited to attend. Glow gear and snacks were offered for purchase. A rockin’ good time was had by all! | Rainbow LabThe budding chemists in Mr. Patterson’s eighth grade physical science classes honed their lab skills this week during the Rainbow Lab. The objective of the exercise was to develop skills measuring chemicals, to practice the metric system, to test precision and ability to follow directions, and to follow lab safety procedures. If done properly, the six test tubes ended up with equal amounts of colored water, each with a different hue of the rainbow. The activity was a colorful, hands-on kick-off to the chemistry unit! |

Club & Activity Info @ West
Chess Club Chess, which requires wit and intellect, is played by millions of people across the globe. It is one of the finest indoor games. Chess is played on a 64 square board of black and white. The aim of the game is to conquer the opposite king. On both sides, there are pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, and the queen to formulate a strategy to attack the opposite army in a war. Once the opposition king is blocked and doesn't have any option to make a move, the game ends. West students from all three grades are welcome again this year to join eighth grade social studies teacher Sean Murphy for Chess Club! The novice Bobby Fischer's will meet every other Wednesday, after school for friendly competition where they will gain experience and skill. | Debate Club Join the PV West Debate Club. Learn the art of constructing, supporting, and discussing arguments. These skills are an integral part of life in a free society. In Debate club students will engage in a variety of discussions centered around group selected topics. They will learn to argue both their own perspective and the perspectives of others. Students will use evidence based practice to back up arguments as well as learning about logical fallacies and cognitive biases that may lead to poor argument construction. Debate club will take place on the second and last Tuesday of each month. | Disc Golf ClubDisc Golf will be starting back up Wednesday, March 22nd weather permitting. We will meet in the gym lobby at 2:40p and go until 3:45p. All you need is an old pair of sneakers in case it is muddy, and a bottle of water. Make sure to dress for the weather! We also have discs you can borrow. Hope to see you there! Any questions, please see Ms. Bangert in room 222 during homeroom or tenth period. |
