Message from the Superintendent
Dr. Jennifer Schiele shares some hope, optimism and gratitude in this month's video message. Thank you for taking a minute to watch "60 seconds with the Superintendent."
Graduation Rates Continue to Climb
The Oregon Department of Education released graduation rates for the 2017-2018 cohort, also known as the Class of 2021. We are very pleased to share that Lake Oswego schools' rates continue to climb. We also show solid improvement among our focal groups identified in the Student Investment Account (SIA) grant that include students who have Individualized Education Plans and students who are English Language Learners. Congratulations to our graduates and all in our learning community who are making significant, lifelong impacts on students throughout our K-12 system.
Starting Elementary School Boundary Review
LOSD enrollment is trending towards pre-pandemic levels and adjusting elementary school boundaries is being considered to create balance across the district. The elementary boundary review will focus on balancing enrollment between Lake Grove and Oak Creek Elementary Schools starting for the 2022-23 school year. We do not anticipate any other elementary schools being impacted by boundary changes at this time.
We are asking original committee members to pick up where they left off and serve on the 2022 review committee. The committee's charge is to work with the superintendent to develop a recommendation for board action by this April.
The committee will meet over Zoom on Wednesdays in February and March. The meetings will be open for public observation and boundary maps in progress will be shared on the district website under Elementary Boundary Review 2022, linked in this newsletter, and discussed during an open house for formal feedback.
Please look forward to more details available soon.
New Secondary Course Proposals
Spanish Immersion Senior Seminar, Lakeridge High School
Sustainability (Working Title), Lake Oswego, Lakeridge High School
Proposals for these recommended courses were developed by our department and teacher leadership teams. Upon board action, theses courses will be part of forecasting for the 2022-23 school year. They are year-long elective courses that may be offered in addition to current course offerings.
To view the board discussion and review the proposals, access the January 11 board meeting video, found under meeting archives.
New Student Registration is Now Open
Registration for the 2022-23 school year is now open for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. LOSD is pleased to offer online registration through its parent portal, ParentVUE (contact your resident school for help with logging in). See the Registration & Verification page of the LOSD website for guidance. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021-22 school year.
Kindergarten Counts Kicks Off
Registration is also open for Spanish Immersion Kindergarten. The informational video for Spanish Immersion Kindergarten will launch on the Palisades World Language School website next Wednesday, Jan. 27.
LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard Up to Date
The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is up to date with known school exposures -- those who have disclosed being symptomatic and/or testing positive for COVID-19 after being in school during their infectious period.
Contact Tracing Update
Oregon Health Authority (OHA) has released new COVID-19 contact tracing and notification recommendations for K-12 settings to lessen the overall burden of contact tracing on K-12 schools, while ensuring school staff and health officials continue tracing and reporting high-risk exposures.
Under the updated guidelines, Oregon will no longer consider masked contact in K-12 settings, including school buses, to be an exposure, regardless of distancing. The updated guidance strongly advises students and staff to maintain physical distancing to the greatest extent possible.
New Support Hotline
Finding Testing Sites
Finding and scheduling testing is currently a challenge due to a limited supply of COVID-19 tests. Those who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or who were exposed to COVID-19 should seek testing through their medical provider or through the community testing sites currently in place in Clackamas County.
Where to Get Vaccinated and Boosted
If you are looking for a COVID-19 vaccine or booster, families can use this easy tool developed by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) to find a clinic. Families can also schedule an appointment or ask questions by calling the OHSU hotline at 833-647-8222, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Standard Response Protocol
Standard Response Protocol, used in more than 30,000 schools nationwide, is a set of research-based actions/drills designed to prepare for emergency situations. One of the objectives of the program is to use concise language practiced by students, staff and first responders in drills throughout the school year. The five possible actions have directives that are unique to the action.
- Hold is used to keep staff and students inside classrooms.
- Secure is used to safeguard students and staff within the building; building entrances are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building.
- Lockdown is used to secure individual rooms and keep students quiet and in place.
- Evacate is used to move students and staff from one location to a different location in or out of the building.
- Shelter is used for group and self protection.
Click here for more information about the Standard Response Protocol.
