NPS Weekly COVID Testing Update

Dear NPS Families,

We are pleased to report that the first week of weekly testing in all schools grades PreK-6 went very well! Therefore, below you will find the testing schedule for weekly testing moving forward.

Please note: If a school's testing day falls on a holiday, the testing will not be rescheduled for that week. The school will test on their regular day the following week.

We will continue symptomatic and Test and Stay testing in grades 7-12+. For now, weekly testing for grades 7-12+ remains paused. Per recommendation from our Medical Advisory Group, the focus remains on weekly testing for grades PreK-6.

Moving forward, we will not send a weekly testing email. You can visit the NPS webpage for up-to-date testing information. Here is the webpage: NPS COVID Testing Webpage.

Thank you to all of our NPS families for your continued partnership in this testing program.

Sincerely,

NPS COVID Testing Team

District Data for COVID Cases and Vaccination

We have recently relaunched our COVID Testing Data Dashboard. On the dashboard, you can review the percentage of students who have opted into testing, as well as the results of the weekly pooled testing. The data dashboard can be found here: COVID Testing Data Dashboard and on our website here: COVID Testing Webpage.

Information on districtwide COVID cases and vaccination rates can be found on the Newton Health and Human Services website here: NPS COVID Case Count and Vaccination Rates.

Big picture

What is the process in general when positive COVID cases are identified in schools, either through school testing or outside testing?

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has developed this flowchart document to help families understand various COVID scenarios in schools. The charts describe when students are testing, how close contacts are identified, and possible action steps that will be taken. Please remember that each COVID case is different and your experience may be different than the flow chart provided. However, this document does provide a general overview of the process.

Updated Communication Protocol

As was the case last year, it is our commitment to be consistent and transparent with notifications of COVID cases in our school buildings. As we continue to respond to COVID scenarios, we have adjusted our communication protocols to be meaningful and informative. Moving forward, please note the changes outlined below:

  • Close contacts will continue to be notified by the school nurse and provided appropriate instructions.

  • Students in a class with a positive case will be notified following the identification of close contacts.

  • Principals will inform families of the number of cases in the school per week through either the weekly eblast/newsletter or a weekly email. This notification will take the place of the “all school” notification that was previously sent on the same day as the class notification.

To view all communication protocols, please see this document: NPS COVID Communication Protocol.
