Director of Schools - Parent Issue 5 - December 2022

Director's Corner

Where does the time go? The magic of the Holiday Season is upon us, and we are quickly approaching the start of the new year. We had such a great start to the school year, and our excitement and enthusiasm continues as we close out 2022!

There is so much learning going on in the Oneida Schools, and our students have been working extremely hard. The month of December tends to be quite hectic as students prepare for EOC exams and semester tests. The Oneida Band's Christmas Concert, Night of the Arts, will be held on December 8th at 6:30pm, and for this year's concert, they are offering the opportunity for Oneida Band Alumni to perform with them for a special piece! If you would like to take part, please reach out to our Band Director, Mr. Johnathan Elliot. Basketball season for OMS and OHS has also begun, so there is something for everyone. Hours of practice and preparation have gone into each of these activities, and it reminds us how fortunate OSSD is to have such great students and talented teachers. I hope that you can attend these events and support our students, coaches, volunteers and sponsors.

I would also like to send out a huge congratulations to Varsity and Junior Varsity Football on a wonderful year! Our OMS Junior Varsity Football team brought home the TMSAA State Championship title! We are extremely proud of our teams, coaches, parents, and volunteers on an excellent job this season!

Oneida High School:

FFA has two teams practicing hard and competing right now. The first team is the Horse Judging Team. This team learns advanced critique techniques and equine vocabulary and serves as judges during equestrian events. They place and score the field of horses and present an oral set of reasons to a panel of judges. This Career Development Event teaches our kids the following: public speaking skills, decision making skills, time management, commitment to a devision and a team. This team competed on 11/14/22 at the state competition at MTSU and placed 26th out of 78 registered teams.

Team Members:

Codie Lackey

Carys Baird

Emily Newport

Jalen Burchfield

Riley Byrge

Our second competing team is our Parliamentary Procedure Team. This team has worked extremely hard learning how to properly conduct a business meeting using Roberts Rules of Order 12th Edition. They won the competition at the District and Sub-Regional levels and are now preparing for Regionals on December 6th at Eagleton College and Career Academy in Maryville. If they place in the top 3 at Regionals, they will move on to compete at the state competition in March at the TN State FFA Convention. This Career Development Event teaches our kids the following: How to properly conduct business in a professional setting, decision making skills, public speaking skills, respectful debate techniques, and teamwork.
