Shimek Shout Out
January 2018
A Message From the Principal
Hello, families! I hope you have all enjoyed a nice, long, relaxing winter break! We are looking forward to getting back into our routines here at school and seeing all of the students and their smiling faces next week!
Iowa Assessment scores are in! The teachers and I are currently analyzing the data and examining our growth areas and how we can improve. We plan to share student data with you at parent teacher conferences in February. We feel it is important to go over the scores with you in order to help you understand what they mean. If you are interested in reviewing your student’s score before then, they are available in Power School or you may contact the main office and we will send a copy home.
We will also begin our winter math and reading assessments in January, called FAST testing. These are the same tests that were given in the fall and will be given again in the spring. Results of the assessments will be shared during the February conferences as well. Having both of these measures, as well as classroom assessments, should give you and the teachers a wealth of information about your student’s academic performance.
6th grade parents, please be sure to mark your calendar with the dates listed in this newsletter for junior high registration. Several pieces of information will be sent home by the teachers. Parents may attend a meeting at South East Junior High to help answer questions you may have. Students will have a separate meeting at Shimek. Placement tests for math will also be given during the month of January.
The PTO has several upcoming events and they need your help! The spring carnival needs the most volunteers, including the silent auction. The links to sign up are below. The annual talent show is also coming up in February! We look forward to seeing all of the fantastic talent showcased that night!
As we enter the new calendar year, I wish you and your family all of the best! I know that we will have lots of success and fun here at school! Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
