Introduction

The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of Northwest Borneo and the Southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession,colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy. In 1888, Brunei became a protectorate: independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in Asia.

Geography/Climate of Brunei

The climate in Brunei is hot, wet, cool, and warm tropical and subtropical at higher altitudes with heavy rainfall.

Brunei is located in Southeastern Asia, bordering the South China Sea and Malaysia. Its geographic coordinates is 4 30 N and 114 40 E.

People and Culture

The culture of Brunei is very similar to Malay cultures. The majority population follow Malay Islamic culture remaining are Chinese and Indian.

It is a traditional dance song accompanied by song and is usually performed during wedding ceremonies. The dance and the song is carried by both male and female dancers

t is a popular dance form of the natives and is generally performed during any festive occasion, mainly to celebrate the end of harvesting season. The dancers are generally clad in their traditional attires of warriors and dance in tune with music and movement of silat.

Government and Citizenship

Absolute Monarchy

Brunei has an Absolute Monarchy.Sultan of Brunei is head of state and head of government.The Sultan is advised by and presides over five councils, which he appoints. The Council of Succession determines succession to the throne should that need arise.

The Religious Council, known in full as the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (BIRC) advises the Sultan on all matters pertaining to islam,

People do not have any right to vote. They cannot discuss politics and if they do they go to jail or beheaded.

Judicial

The Judicial system follows that of British. They have Supreme court and high court.

The Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court consists of three Judges, all of whom are currently retired British judges.

The other system of Justice in Brunei is the shariah courts. It deals mainly in Muslim .

Economy

Brunei is a country with a small, wealthy economy that is a mixture of foreign and domestic entrepreneurship, government regulation and welfare measures, and village tradition.
