REPORT DAMAGED CHROMEBOOKS
Smith Artwork On Display At The Capital
Two students from CFISD had their artwork chosen to be displayed by House Representative 132 Mike Schofield at his District and Capital offices. One of those students was Smith’s own Emily Hancock, grade 8, whose Rodeo artwork titled Friends was chosen to be displayed in Schofield’s office for the next few years. The painting is also included in the upcoming online electronic rodeo exhibit, which is taking the place of this year’s in-person district art show due to COVID.
The other student was Bridgeland Highschool’s Jasmine Lu, grade 9, with her painting titled Homeward Bound.
VASE Art Competition Results
The Visual Arts Scholastic Event, known as VASE, is a yearly state art competition held by the TAEA where art students from across the state of Texas submit artwork they have completed over that school year to be judged. Students would normally present their artwork in front of a judge and answer questions and defend artistic choices and be scored on a scale of 1-4 with 4 being the highest. Scores of 4 receive VASE medals and have a chance of winning a platinum best in show.
Last year’s competition was canceled completely due to COVID reasons and this year’s competition was 100% virtual, meaning that art students were unable to defend their artwork in person and instead had to write out answers to questions and submit along with a photo of their artwork.
This did nothing to deter this year’s Smith Art Students. Of the 153 works submitted by 9 participating Cy Fair middle schools, Smith submitted 34 artworks – of those, 29 received rankings of four and, of those, two received a platinum distinction.
Students received a Platinum Distinction are :
Cecile Cerisier with her “Self-Portrait on Argyle Skies”
Andrew Kosek with his “Black Birds on a Branch”
