A Look Inside Our Classrooms
Grade 5 Science
The 5th grade science classes ventured outside on Friday to observe shadows. They were seeking information to answer the question, "How does the time of day affect an object's shadow?" Students traced shadows of small objects, recorded the time, and then measured each shadow, at two different times during the day. This activity gave students a first hand experience with concepts they've been learning about in class.

Grade 5 Advisory
Last week Ms. Roth and Ms. Flatley had the pleasure of meeting with and talking to the 5th grade students in their Science classes. Students were given an overview of the role of a School Counselor as well as other support staff in the building. Information was shared on how and when they can meet with or talk to their counselor, Ms. Roth. Students were able to ask questions and also had an opportunity to share about their summer, their family and favorite activities. We are looking forward to getting to know the 5th grade!
Grade 5 Health
This week, students in Grades 5 who have health in Quad 1 learned about how two seemingly opposites can be true at the same time- this is called thinking dialectically! Students shared aspects of their own identities that can be thought of us totally opposite, like being talkative and quiet! Students learned the benefits of thinking about themselves with complexity as they develop their self-awareness.
Please contact Mary Ann Flatley @914-741-1420 ext. 10535 or flatleym@pleasantvilleschools.org if you have questions, concerns, or are in need of social/emotional resources.

WEEKLY REMINDERS
Rotary Pancake Breakfast
The Rotary Club of Pleasantville is excited to bring back our annual Pancake Breakfast on October 1st, after a 3 year COVID hiatus. The funds raised from the breakfast will help support the Pleasantville Community Scholarship Fund which was founded by our Rotary Club back in 1945. While the Scholarship Fund now operates independently, Rotary takes great pleasure in continuing to support it with an average annual contribution of $5000.
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.

8th Grade Community Service
Eighth grade students who complete 25 hours or more of community service by Friday, May 12, 2023 will receive a community service award at graduation. This service must be completed for a not-for-profit agency and a supervisor from that agency must sign off on the student's hours. No parent signatures will be accepted. All hours must be completed during the student's 8th grade school year including the summer before 8th grade.
Students must submit the Community Service Voucher form to their counselor for review on Nov 9, Jan 11, and Mar 15 in addition to the final submission on May 12, 2023. Forms are posted on the bulletin board outside of Mrs. Leyden's office.
Community service opportunities will be posted on the bulletin board throughout the year as they become available within school. Other possibilities are the farmers market (see info below), houses of worship, middle school garden, peer tutoring, PTA activities, etc.
Please have your child see Mrs. Leyden for more information.
Composting Station at Pleasantville Farmers Market
The composting station at the Pleasantville Farmers Market was started by a Girl Scout for her gold award. It is our community’s job to keep it going. That’s why we need you to volunteer at the composting station. For your help you will receive community service hours. The composting station is there to decrease the amount of trash produced by the Farmers Market. That includes helping members of the community place their items in the correct bin. The Google sheet for market composting volunteering is located below. Please add your name to whichever weekends you can commit to volunteering. Morning shifts are from 8:20-10:45, and afternoon shifts take place from 10:45-1:10. Thank you!
