January 2017

Dear friends,

I've been meaning to share with you all the following few bits and pieces in person, but alas, an email will have to do!

Happy Friday,

Natalie

Live now, to share with students the week of Feb. 6

We have switched from our current library system, Alexandria, to Follett Destiny, a system many schools across the country use, and a system that is more user-friendly to us all, we hope. It's been a hectic past couple of weeks as we readied ourselves for the switch, and it will be another crazy few weeks as we get acclimated to Destiny.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

I'll announce at Settling In on Monday that we are changing library catalogs.

Monday and Tuesday will be normal checkout days using Alexandria.

On Wednesday, I'll suspend all checkouts using our checkout computer. Students and teachers can still see me to check out materials that week.

On Monday, Feb. 6th, we will begin using Destiny as our library catalog and checkout center. I will have to re-teach students how to use the self-checkout (it's very similar).

MORE INFO COMING SOON!

2. UPCOMING AUTHOR SKYPE

Skype with Mike Maihack, author of CLEOPATRA IN SPACE

Tuesday, Feb. 7th, 12:30pm

4809 Friends School Road

Durham, NC

During lunch recess on Tuesday, February 7, students (and teachers!) will have the opportunity to Skype with Mike Maihack, author and illustrator of the Cleopatra in Space graphic novel series, in the LS Library.

3. FAKE NEWS, YOU SAY?

Or is it "alternative facts"?

We teach students how to access, evaluate, and use information every day. In our current climate (social, political, digital), learning and teaching students how to discern fact from fiction is more important than ever. Luckily, many librarians, teachers, and organizations are on it! Below you'll find just a few resources to help in your own understanding and maybe teaching, too.
