Penguin Press News
The Week of September 17th
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Laurel Park Families,
We hope that all of our Penguin families are safe and sound, preparing for the school week ahead. After surveying our building, we are happy to report that we did NOT suffer any major damage. Our systems are in good working order, and aside from the normal debris expected during heavy storms, our walkways and doorway areas are clear.
Here are a few reminders and announcements for the week ahead:
- Mr. Schwartz, our Technology teacher, has resigned his position and will be leaving by mid-week. He has accepted a teaching position at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, teaching at a school on an Indian reservation. He is very excited about this opportunity, but has shared how much he will miss the staff, students, and families at Laurel Park. We have discussed ways to connect our two schools once he is settled. Please join me in wishing him well! jschwartz@wcpss.net
- This Saturday, September 22nd will be our first weather make-up day (for Friday, 9/14). School will begin at 9:15 AM and end at 12:45 PM. No breakfast or lunch will be served on Saturday make-up days.
- The second weather make-up day will be Saturday, December 8th. Both of these make-up days are only for tracks 2, 3, and 4.
Thank you for your support!
Kind Regards,
Raleigh G. Bame

Dot Day has been Rescheduled for this FRIDAY, 9/21
nternational Dot Day is Coming!
Laurel Park students, along with students from over 175 countries in the world, will celebrate “International Dot Day” on Friday, Sept. 21st. (Official date is Saturday, 15th.)
“International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.”
In honor of “The Dot”, we will have a “Polka Dot” spirit day next Friday! Help your students find some way to wear a dot (or many dots) on September 14th. In addition, students will be reading The Dot and discussing how they plan to “make their mark” on the world. Their reflections will be put on decorated “dots” to be hung in our hallways. We can’t wait to see how our Laurel Park Penguins plan to improve our world!
Counselors' Corner September 2018
Counseling Intern
We are fortunate to have Ms. Nicki Lee back with us as our counseling intern during the 2018-19 school year! Ms. Lee is finishing up her Master of Education program in School Counseling at North Carolina State University. She also earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from NC State in May 2017 and completed her practicum with us during the spring semester of last school year. Nicki has experience mentoring students in Wake County Public Schools and working with children in an after-school program.
Having an intern provides additional resources for meeting the social-emotional needs of our students. Ms. Lee will be working with our school counselors, Mrs. MacEntee and Ms. Waddell, in various roles of support for Laurel Park students. Please contact either counselor if you would like additional information or are interested in having Ms. Lee work with your child. Thank you!
