January Newsletter

Mrs. Ifft's Second Grade Class

Happy New Year!

Hello families and friends of Mrs. Ifft's classroom!

A New Year's resolution of mine is to create a monthly newsletter for our class as a way to stay connected with what is happening in Room 8. I hope you find this helpful!

Mrs. Ifft :)

What We're Learning

In math, we are continuing to practice two-digit subtraction with regrouping. Remember "carrying and borrowing?" We don't say that anymore. It's the same strategy to solve subtraction, but your second grader will say "regroup" instead of borrow or carry over. As always, help your child with their math! Your help and guidance will never do them wrong with their homework.

In reading, we are learning to make inferences to figure out elements of the story that the author doesn't write. We are learning about context clues and how these help us make stronger inferences. We are also exploring nonfiction texts and learning how to identify the main idea of nonfiction stories.

In science, we are beginning a new unit on Earth science, specifically pebbles, sand, and silt. We will be getting messy and exploring various elements of the Earth's crust and learning ways to distinguish them.

In writing, we are beginning to research a topic to write a nonfiction book!

Wish List

We are in need of the following items and would appreciate your donation!

- chisel tip black Expo markers

- felt tip black Sharpies, normal size (not fine-tip or extra fat point)

Spelling Update

In the fall, students practiced spelling in small groups. The groups focused on different areas of spelling need, such as long vowels, vowel teams, or prefix and suffixes.

Now, second grade will continue practicing spelling in the new year. However, our focus has shifted to commonly misspelled words. We are using a list high frequency words for second graders to create spelling lists.

If you would like to help your child practice these words at home, I encourage you to do so! However, it is NOT homework and not mandatory. You can find the list posted on our Homework Canvas page.
