Palestine
History:
Palestine was a common name used until 1948 to describe the geographic region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. In its history, the Assyrian, Babylonian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires have controlled Palestine at one time or another.
After World War I, Palestine was administered by the United Kingdom under a Mandate received in 1922 from the League of Nations. The modern history of Palestine begins with the termination of the British Mandate, the Partition of Palestine and the creation of Israel, and the ensuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Location:
Palestine is located on the east coast of Mediterranean Sea, located to the west of Jordan and south of Lebanon in the Middle East.
Hometown:
Palestine has always been located in the Middle East
Languages:
The official language of Palestine is Arabic.
Conflict:
The struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one of the most enduring and explosive of all the world's conflicts. It has its roots in the historic claim to the land which lies between the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan river. For the Palestinians the last 100 years have brought colonization, expulsion and military occupation, followed by a long and difficult search for self-determination and for coexistence with the nation they hold responsible for their suffering and loss. For the Jewish people of Israel, the return to the land of their forefathers after centuries of persecution around the world has not brought peace or security. They have faced many crises as their neighbors have sought to wipe their country off the map.
Influential person:
Tawfeek Ameen Zaiad was born in the city of Al-Nasera in the seventh of may 1929. He participated throughout the years he lived in the Palestinian political life in Palestine, and fought for the rights of his people. He was president of the Al-Nasera municipality 3 times during three election periods (1975-1994).
Independence:
The Palestinian Declaration of Independence was written on 15 November 1988. It had previously been adopted by the Palestinian National Council, the legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization, by a vote of 253 in favor, 46 against, and 10 abstentions.
Right of power:
The Palestinian Authority is the interim self-government body established to govern the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a consequence of the 1993 Oslo Accords. Originally founded as the Palestinian National Administration, the Fatah- controlled entity transformed itself into the State of Palestine in 2013, after the United Nations voted to recognize Palestine as a non-member UN observer state. It is a semi-presidential system.
Today:
On November 29, 2012, UN General Assembly resolution 67/19 passed, upgrading Palestine to "non-member observer state" status in the United Nations. The change in status was described as "de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine." De facto means in practice but not officially established.
