Fall Fest Fun Run!
Who: Students at Obsidian Middle School
What: Obsidian Middle School’s 1st Annual Fall Fest Fun Run
Where: OMS Track
When: 10/30 (6th grade), 11/1 (7th grade), 11/2 (8th grade)
Why:
The goal of this school-wide initiative is to promote uninterrupted movement by walking, jogging or running.
I believe that participating in an outdoor activity can positively affect us physically, mentally and socially.
I’ll challenge myself and see how many laps I will be able to run/jog/walk in 45 minutes.
The collected funds will be used to support the efforts in promoting an active lifestyle through PE classes and athletics.
Are you willing to support me with a donation?

Coaches Corner
The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Students should gain a knowledge and appreciation of various sports, rules, strategies and skills that may enable them, in the future, to become a lifelong learner of fitness. Students also need to accept responsibility for their actions and be able to function effectively in individual and group activities.
GYM 101:
Classes are off and running, literally. Students have already completed units in football, ultimate frisbee and flashball. That being said, we will be maximizing our time outside as the weather permits. Students are strongly encouraged to have sweats available to combat the early morning chill.
The department would like to welcome Mr. Kyle Kuust to the program. He is a current graduate student at Western Oregon University and is completing his student teaching with Mrs. Stock's classes. He will be teaching all of first trimester. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Kuust at kyle.kuust@redmondschools.org. Welcome Mr. Kuust!
Health Education:
Many of you may not realize it, but Health is a required subject for all students in the state of Oregon. Here at OMS, health is taught during PE time. Currently, Mr. Bowman's classes will receive instruction on Wednesdays for the year. Mrs. Stock's classes will complete the health units in one chunk beginning in late November. Mrs. Hanks will be doing two week units throughout the year. Students will receive instruction in the following content areas:
Improving Health Behaviors
Violence and Injury Prevention
Emotional and Mental Health
Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention
Sex Education
Nutrition and Fitness

Coaching Corner:
The dawn of the multiple sport athlete seems to be a thing of the past. More and more, athletes are focusing their efforts in one sport to maximize playing time or the dream of scholarship potential. A recent article in Healthday: News for Healthier Living, suggests a rise in injuries for single sport injuries.
