The Connection
Programs for Exceptional Children, April 25, 2022, 37th ed
Welcome Back from Spring Break!
We hope you had a fun and restful time over spring break! We're ready to finish the school year strong! In this edition of The Connection you will find a Transition parent training all about helping your student plan for life after high school. This planning actually begins once a student turns 13! We hope you will join us for this informative and important virtual training!
You will also find a fun Yarn Wrapping Tulip craft you can do with your student, information about CVI (Cortical Visual Impairment) which is the leading cause of blindness in children and the registration information for the next Family AAC Support Group! And there is even more great information in this month's newsletter!
We hope you'll take some time to read through these resources, and don't forget that if you need a question answered or just aren't sure where to turn, you can contact our Parent Liaison, Erika Chapman, at 843-292-1008 or echapman@f1s.org. She would love to connect with you!

Want to Learn More about CVI (Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment)?
Have you ever heard of CVI (Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment)? It is the leading cause of blindness in children. At F1S we have two TVIs (Teacher for the Visually Impaired), Elizabeth Cox and Katherine Barber. They recently held an in-service for our Exceptional Education teachers about CVI.
"CVI is a brain-based visual impairment caused by damage to the visual pathways or visual processing areas of the brain—and it’s the leading cause of blindness in children. Individuals with CVI are on the blindness spectrum and neurodiverse, and their perspective on the world is unique and valuable. An individualized multisensory approach to learning and intervention, rooted in comprehensive assessment, empowers life-changing access."
To learn more check out the CVI Now Perkins School for the Blind website! Full of great information and resources for both you and your student!

Have you heard of Camp Spearhead?
AN ENVIRONMENT OF UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE
Camp Spearhead is more than just a camp. It’s a place where children and adults with special needs are able to escape the social isolation they often experience; in this extraordinary place, they are understood, included, appreciated. Here, our campers intuitively sense they belong. Camp Spearhead offers opportunity, choice, self-determination and delivers experiences we all value and treasure – challenges to try new and exciting things, the development of new friendships, and the chance to “get away from it all” for a few days.
Founded in 1968, Camp Spearhead offers 8 one-week-long residential camp sessions in the summer and two different seasons of The Weekend Program throughout the school year. The camp facility is nestled in beautiful northern Greenville County off scenic highway 11 and was specifically designed to meet the wide-ranging needs of our campers. Check out the website for details!
