Citing Textual Evidence - Prove It!
"Citing textual evidence" asks the student to find proof in what he or she read to support an idea or answer. Students can quote (not too much!) or paraphrase the evidence into their writing. Citing textual evidence strengthens student writing by encouraging analytical thinking and logic.
What Does It Look Like in a Classroom?
Teach the Concept
Don't want to use the TeachingChannel video with students or parents? Try this tutorial to walk students through the text evidence process. Here's a great PPT with explanations and student practice!
Practice
- Students may need this graphic organizer to organize the process
- Short passages with a variety of styles
- Paired texts with lessons and questions
- More paired texts with lesson plans - advanced
More Resources
Just can't get enough? Here are a few more options:
- Pinterest board with text evidence options (I really like the "show me the evidence" bookmarks)
- Get students writing about the evidence - a Pinterest board with writing tips
- One more Pinterest board of ideas
- A free handout of sentence starters
How Do I Incorporate Technology?
- Have students mark a text on the ActivBoard
- Use Socrative (or a like device or program) to give response to a group text
- Have students share a current event on OneDrive - choose one for a class discussion
- Use school eBooks for text - many are simultaneous use - students can mark a text on their own device while the class participates
