Hillcrest Elementary School
May 22, 2020
Reminder: There will be no Distance Learning on Monday, May 25th in honor of Memorial Day.
Important Message from Dr. Fraser
Please be advised that the last day of “new” learning for seniors will be Friday, June 5th, and the last day of “new” learning for K-11 students will be Tuesday, June 9th. CR teachers will generally be available to provide student make-up work and to assist with extra help on June 10th-12th and June 15th-16th. Please know, however, that during this period of time our teachers will return to school on a rotating basis to close out their classrooms while adhering to social distancing guidelines, and thus will not be available at all times during these days to provide immediate assistance. I thank you in advance for accommodating our need to close out the school year in ways that are quite different from how we are accustomed to doing so.
Additionally, please know that any K-11 student who has borrowed a Chromebook should keep that Chromebook at home over the summer. These Chromebooks will be returned to school when schools reopen. Other arrangements will be made for any senior who has borrowed a Chromebook.
Support from Our School Guidance Counselor
Dr. Sandberg is updating Social and Emotional Learning activities to her website each week. What might you find? A template for a COVID-19 time capsule, calming slideshows for handling emotions, and weekly lists of activities to promote Social and Emotional well-being.
USE THIS LINK WHEN YOU ARE TIRED AND NEED A BREAK FROM YOUR DISTANCE LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO RE-ENERGIZE! THANKS MRS. TORMEY FOR CREATING SUCH AN AWESOME SITE!
DISTANCE LEARNING THIS WEEK!
Attention 4th, 5th & 6th Grade Parents
As part of the yearly health curriculum 4th , 5th, and 6th grade students receive instruction on human growth & development. As part of our distance learning we would like to extend this opportunity to your homes during this time. For each grade level please see the link to a video that we encourage you to view with your student, as they would have done with their Physical Education teacher and School Nurse in the classroom. We understand that these can be difficult conversations to have with your students, but they are of great importance to our children’s health. If you prefer that your child does not receive this instruction please disregard this letter. Additional resources are provided below the grade levels if you are looking to further these conversations.
Summer Programs Update
Council Rock School District is canceling its Summer Music Program, Summer Academic and STEM Academy, and Camp Invention. Any registrations and payments received will be returned to families over the next several weeks.
Please note that Camp Invention is offering an at home alternative this summer. The Council Rock Director, Christine Marsden, will reach out in a few days with additional details on how to sign up for the at home version and/or get a full refund.
For questions about these three summer programs, please contact Dr. Susan Elliott, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning via email at email@example.com. Thank you for your understanding. Please stay safe and well.
We wanted to introduce a way for you to see some familiar faces from our school and also get a little Language Arts going on before bedtime! Coming soon, there will be TWO versions of "Goodnight Hillcrest!" available for your listening and viewing pleasure. One link will have our own HCE staff reading a variety of picture books, and one will have chapter books where you can click on one chapter to listen to at a time. The first chapter book that is available will be Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary. We have had a lot of fun making videos of books and we hope that you enjoy listening to them as much as we enjoyed making them!
Please note that you MUST sign in under your child's CRSD Credentials.
Please contact Mrs. Gassmann at Colleen.Gassmann@crsd.org if you have questions or problems accessing this link.
FLEXIBLE FRIDAYS---IT'S A WIN...WIN!

- Exploratory Days---work on something that interests you! (w/your parent's permission of course!)
- Enrichment Days (perhaps you can go back to your classroom assignments and complete some of those optional activities that you may have skipped during the week)
- Visit those Special Area sites that you just haven't gotten around to yet
- Work with your teacher in an area that you might be having difficulty
- Work with specialist/counselor in an area that you might need support
- Visit the Student Wellness Website that will feature activities and learning opportunities on health & wellness (physical, mental, social)- Emails with the new link for new activities will be sent out every Thursday.
(This list is not exhaustive...but simply ideas for those WIN Fridays!)
Problem with Technology?
Contact your child's homeroom teacher first. The teacher may be able to resolve the issue or find an alternative way to complete an assignment. If the issue is with regard to a Council Rock Chromebook being broken or not working, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
