Message from the Principal
Dear Slate Hill families,
It was another GREAT Week at the Slate! Our first graders enjoyed sharing all of their learning about penguins with their families. The evening ended with our first graders sharing some songs they learned even some in Spanish. Our first graders also performed during the day for the whole school. At our PTA meeting this week, our related arts team and 4th grade team taught us some fun things about their curriculum and how families can support their child at home. Don't miss the next PTA meeting on May 11th! Everyone is always welcome! On Friday (St. Patrick's Day), all of our Slate Hill Stars were on the lockout for a leprechaun that was causing mischief in the building! Just another fun and adventurous week at the Slate!

Counselor's Corner
Does your student think life just happens to them, or that they are the victim in every circumstance? A great way to challenge your students' mentality is by teaching them personal accountability. Below are a few quick ways that you can show or teach your student personal accountability.

Kids Heart Challenge
Hello Slate Hill Families:
Thank you for participating in Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) and for supporting the American Heart Association! Finn’s Mission is teaching our students and families to move more, be kind, help others, learn the critical lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR, and know the warning signs of a stroke. KHC is underway NOW at our school and you can help. It’s fun, easy, and our school earns back free PE equipment for our participation.
Finn was born with a special heart and has been working hard to help raise awareness and support for kids with special hearts just like him. This year, he set a goal to get 1.8 million families to learn Hands-Only CPR, in honor of the 18 procedures he has had.
Congratulations to those of you who already completed Finn’s Mission. Our goal was to have at least 18 families complete the mission for Finn’s 18 heart procedures! Who will be the next 18 to help SAVE A LIFE?
Help Finn, today and help our school learn more about heart health while helping others. You can:
- DOWNLOAD THE FREE KIDS HEART CHALLENGE APP for Apple or Android and COMPLETE FINN’S MISSION to put the forever lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR into YOUR family’s hands. It takes only 2 minutes!
Or, you can click on our schools direct link here: http://www2.heart.org/goto/SlateHillElementarySchool - Check how close you are to completing Finn’s Mission by logging into your Headquarters today! Earn Finn’s Lifesaver Award when you complete all 8 challenges!
Your support will continue to make a big difference in the fight against heart disease and stroke by assisting families just like Finn’s. Your student will be receiving some fun rewards and prizes, and we will be celebrating with some classroom and grade level competitions and rewards!
Thank you for being a Heart Hero!!! We will be doing collections and activities through March 24th!
Panorama Survey
Dear Slate Hill Families,
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. As you may already be aware, building our well-being and social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year and every year. Over the next few weeks, students will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves.
As we have done for the last several years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from March 20-31.
We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering these surveys. The survey content will ask students in grades 3-12 to self-reflect on School Safety, Teacher-Student Relationships, Sense of Belonging, Rigorous Expectations, and Self-Efficacy. Additionally, our students in grades 6-12 will also be asked to self-reflect on two additional topics; Diversity and Inclusion and Cultural Awareness.
Student voice matters to us and their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our instruction to meet their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
If you have any questions about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office at 614-450-5000.

Finley's Smile is a nonprofit that was created by Kristin and Tyler Hollinger after their daughter, Finley Grace passed away in 2016. The Finley's Smile 5K & Smile Mile is the primary fundraiser for the organization. The goal of Finley's Smile is to provide fun, authentic and meaningful experiences for children, while encouraging families to spend time together. Some of the projects funded by Finley's Smile include the Games in Schools program at Slate Hill Elementary (as well as other Worthington Schools). This program provides students with the opportunity to check out board games from the school library to enjoy with their families. Finley's Smile has also provided over $40,000 through our Love, Play, Smile grant. This grant goes to support other nonprofit organizations who share their vision to provide children and their families/caregivers with fun, background building experiences!
