Concerning Trends

Families,

There are so many positive things going on at Longfellow! But, unfortunately, recent TikTok trends have appeared at our school, leading to destruction of property, theft, and cleanliness issues, especially in our bathrooms. We have specifically seen stolen or damaged soap, soap dispensers, and teacher supplies. Several students have reported seeing these trends on TikTok and some have unfortunately chosen to record themselves destroying and/or stealing Longfellow property or teacher property.

We have taken steps to monitor bathrooms and apply consequences to those who participate. We are also engaging students in digital citizenship lessons this year. Yet, we are still seeing some issues. We will continue to evaluate how we can lessen the impact of these trends on our school to ensure we have a safe and clean campus.

Please also consider having a conversation with your Longfellow child/children about this issue. Your partnership with us is so important.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions!

3. Meal Benefits Form

We encourage everyone to complete a meal benefits form. If you already completed this form during enrollment, please disregard this message. While breakfast and lunch meals are free for all students this year, completing this form is very helpful in terms of providing funds for our school district. If your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch, he/she/they could also qualify for other helpful programs both within and outside of the school district.

To complete this form, please go to your parent portal account by clicking here.

After logging in, click on the word "more" and then "meal benefits."

If you have any questions, please call us at 405-366-5948.

THANK YOU!!!!!

4. THANK YOU, PTA!!!

Thank you to our PTA for donating snacks and beverages to teachers last week! We are so appreciative of that!

5. Outside Food Delivery

Important Reminder of NPS Policy regarding outside food delivery:

At all sites, outside food deliveries after the school day begins will not be allowed. This will limit the number of guests in our front offices and help us protect our employees. Family members and outside guests will not be allowed to dine in our cafeterias with their children or other students. We will reassess this regularly to determine if it is safe to then allow food deliveries. Student checkouts during lunch may take more time, please consider this when making your plans. If a child forgets his/her lunch, lunch will be provided. (source: NPS Return to Learn Plan)

6. Athlete Pick-Up Update

In the interest of student safety and supervision, Longfellow Athletics will require all student-athletes to wait at the top of the bus oval by the entrance to the gymnasium when waiting to get picked up at Longfellow. Please have a conversation with your child about making sure they are waiting in the correct place after practice.

7. Athletics at LMS

Many students and families have had questions about what sports we offer and for which grades. Check out this flyer (linked below) to learn all about Athletics at LMS, including what sports are available, sign-up dates, information about physicals, and coaches' contact information!

8. MacBook Restrictions (Google Rooms/Chat)

While MacBooks are an integral part to a lot of your child's school experience, we also know accessing the internet can have complications. Norman Public Schools does allow you to request specific restrictions for your child. You may use the form linked below to view and request these restrictions. The form has links to more specific information, as well.

We are especially seeing issues with Google Rooms and Chat, which have new emphasis on GMail. You can turn this off for your child manually using the steps below:

TURN OFF GOOGLE ROOMS & CHAT ON A COMPUTER

TURN IT OFF IN THE GMAIL APP

You may also request to have these turned off using the link below. It may affect some gaming sites, as well, if you use the form option.

10. BEFORE-SCHOOL INFORMATION

We want to remind you that we do not have any teachers on duty until 8:10am every school day. Many students get to school earlier and we have found some are choosing to leave campus, sometimes going to a nearby convenience store. We are doing what we can to monitor this and to remind students to remain on campus. Please reinforce this message at home, if you can. Thank you for partnering with us to keep students safe!

11. Partner with NPS

The Partners in Education program is a partnership between Norman Public Schools and the Norman Chamber of Commerce that encourages collaborative efforts between schools and local businesses and organizations. These businesses provide mentoring, materials and resources that add to the school curriculum and enhance student learning. If your organization or business would like to partner with a school, click here to sign up.

12. JOIN CANVAS!

You can join your child's Canvas courses!

While Infinite Campus can show you final grades, Canvas allows you to observe your child's learning process. As a Canvas Observer, you have access to their assignments, instructions, submissions, grades, and other course information.
