ERO Report 2020
We are delighted to share our confirmed ERO report. We are proud of all the time and effort that has gone into improving our school over the past 4.5 years and this is reflected in the report.

Building Work
Over the next few weeks you will notice building work at the front of our school as our front entrance is transformed - something that we are very excited about. The current staffroom will be the first major change and we look forward to bringing you updates as we go along.

A message from one of our whānau leaders
Kia ora everyone, my name’s Yelena and I am one of the Whānau Leaders for Piwakawaka.
I’ve noticed that the weather is getting a bit colder so we need to make the most of the rest of the warm weather. This also means that we need to have our hats on at morning tea and lunch.
This Friday we have senior swimming sports. All years 5-8 will be walking to Bell Block pools on Friday afternoon. We’ll be doing races, manu competitions, whānau relays and the kids versus adults relay ( which I’m sure the kids will be awesome at ), so make sure that you don’t forget to bring your togs.
The school also has got the Student Body Council up and running again, unfortunately, last year we didn’t do it after COVID interrupted it. We discuss different issues around Puketapu, and try to find solutions. We organise different events and fundraisers. So make sure if you have any ideas for the school then just come and talk to us, we would love to hear your ideas.
Make sure if you see me around the playground that you come say hi.

Lunches in schools
Five of the least popular items are being swapped out so you will no longer be seeing frittata, tabbouleh, pesto, beetroot or feta. The salad dressing will be more simple with more of a thick mayonnaise.
Details of the updated menu is available on Hero - check the community notice sent by Matua Ngatai on Monday.
Day one of the change went down very well - Yum!

Transition visits are starting in week 8 for our 12 new entrants that start on the first day of term 2.
If you see new faces around the school please say hi and make them feel welcome.
Design tech in Totara
As part of the Design process designers use an exercise to get lots of ideas quickly. This is called Crazy 8's.
With the Totara Design Tech classes we are practicing Crazy 4's.
Our Totara designers have 1 minute to draw their design ideas into a box. Once 1 minute is up they have to stop and then start on their next box for another minute.
The point of this process is to get different ideas quickly and then work in more detail on the best ideas.
Totara have been designing Monsters to then light up with LED lights.
I think the best part of this process is that there is no right or wrong way to do your design. It is helping students to be ok with making mistakes and then learning from them.

Chords in Kauri
"We have been learning the cords and the song Don't Forget Your Roots. We look forward to it each week and I even did my own song." - Vengeance Hellier

Home and School Needs You!
Our Home and School has been an important part of Puketapu School for many, many years.
We have three vital functions:
Fundraising to earn money for projects
Spending the money to benefit our school
Connecting the people of our school community
Some of our projects have included, junior playground, swings, monkey bars, swimming equipment, play gear, supporting events such as cross country and school picnics and many other events.
We are really appreciative of everything past members of our Home and school have achieved.
As you are aware, 2020 was a time of reflection and change.
We want to revitalise and revamp our Home and School to be new and different as we move through 2021 and beyond.
We would love to gather your knowledge, ideas and experiences and work together to refresh our Home and School.
Please join us for coffee and cake on Wednesday 5 May, 7.00pm in the Design Tech Hub. All welcome!
SPORTS
Coaches Needed
We are looking for more coaches or team managers for our winter sports teams.
Currently, we have 9 Netball teams, 3 Hockey teams, 4 Miniball teams and 4 Basketball teams.
Some coaching will be provided in school and some sports do provide coaching sessions. Without coaches & volunteers these sports would not be able to go ahead so please if you have any whanau members that can assist get in touch with Kim Sowman ksowman@puketapu.school.nz or PM her through Facebook.
Hockey Years 7/8
We are 4 players short of a team. It would be so amazing to have a Puketapu Team for the first time in along time. If there are any children out there considering playing then this is the season! Played on Mondays or Fridays for term 2 at the Hockey Turf in New Plymouth. Please let Kim Sowman know asap.
Year 7 & 8 Netball
Our year 7 & 8 netballers have started some lunchtime practice before their trials on Monday 29 March from 3.15pm-4.00pm.
It was a great turn out and the girls were all happy to be back on the netball court after a long break.
School pool still in action
senior swimming sports
There is a number of competitive and fun events for students to enter. Students are encouraged to enter at least 2 events.
We will be walking to the pools after Morning tea on Friday. Students will be given their lunch to take with them. Please make sure your child brings a water bottle.
We are also asking for some adult helpers for recording and placings. If you are able to help on the day please let Mr Lewis or Mrs J know. And of course, the annual adults vs kids relay will be hotly contested - any parents/guardians/aunts/uncles that might be interested in joining the champion adults team please let us know as well.
Remember to dress in your whanau colours.

pasifika
"Pasifika is super cool and when we had a day of pasifika I was excited. When I was on stage I was so nervous but it was so jaw-dropping. After the pasifika performance, there was some prize-giving and I won lots of prizes one of the prizes was $20 and you had to run up and get the $20 so I sprinted up the stage and won the $20." - Harper Sutherland, Kauri
On a very cold and windy Saturday morning 9 Kauri girls performed at tukapa field to represent their school, Puketapu. There weren't as many people as I thought there was gonna be which made me feel a bit better. We watched a few schools and they were really good, my favourite was definitely NPGHS and I also liked Devon’s. Before we went on we took our jumpers off and went for a 2min jog to get us warmer. Once we were on the stage I was so nervous that my head piece was gonna fly off in front of everyone. I really enjoyed performing, it was so fun, but really cold at the same time. There werefun games going like volleyball and tug of war (and of course we took out most of them). I can’t wait until our next performance and hopefully, we could get some more boys on the team." - Esther Poching - Kauri
Rylei-Jay Dellow, Esther Poching, Harper Sutherland, Areiana Zandbergen, Amy-Jaide Paki, Marley Sutherland, Rihanna Dellow, Yelena Poching and Celestial Roberts ready for their Pasifika performance.
