Notes from our Nurse
Illness Reminders: If you child is ill, remember to call the school absence line at 513 686-1714. It can be difficult to decide when and how long to keep an ill child home from school. The timing of the absences is often important in order to decrease the spread of disease to others.
If your child has a fever, is vomiting or has diarrhea they must stay home until they no longer have the symptoms for 24 hours without the use of medication to control the symptoms.
Check our school illness guidelines at https://www.sycamoreschools.org/Page/2308 . The school district health handbook has more information and found on the district website at http://www.sycamoreschools.org/Page/2268 .
Prevention is the Best Medicine: Good handwashing and covering your cough and sneeze are best practices to prevent the spread of illness especially the Flu!
The CDC recommends Flu Vaccine for all individuals 6 months and older. Check out the CDC website for more information regarding the Flu and the Flu vaccine at
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/children.htm
Attention Fourth Grade Parents Hold the Date: Blue Ash Elementary will host a Growth and Development preview night on March 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. This is an information meeting for parents only to preview materials used for Fourth Grade Growth and Development class.
Lice Review:
Checking your student for head lice is a recommended part of your child’s hygiene and especially if you notice your student scratching their scalp. Parents will often ask how to look for head lice and if found what is the best treatment.
Here are some facts about head lice:
The louse is 1-2 millimeters, grayish-brown and oval in shape. It does not fly or jump but moves fast, making it difficult to detect on the scalp. Its eggs (nits), however, are small, silvery, oval shaped bodies attached firmly to hair shafts close to the scalp, and often detected on hair around ears and near the hairline by the back of the neck.
Head lice do not cause disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.
Head lice live only on human heads. Pets do not get or transmit head lice.
Head lice transmission is primarily by head to head contact. Avoid prolonged head to head contact.
Head lice and their eggs (nits) begin to dehydrate as soon as separated from their human host. Adult head lice can live only a day or so off the human head without blood for feeding. Nits removed from the head cannot hatch at a temperature lower than that close to the human scalp. For these reasons, the risk of transmission of head lice from objects or the environment is low.
Only live lice can spread to another person. Nits (eggs) cannot spread to another person.
Only treat if you see lice or nits. Most over the counter products to treat lice are effective. You may consult with your child’s pediatrician, the pharmacist or call the school nurse for further information.
After initial treatment, continue to check often for up to 3 weeks. You may need to repeat the Lice shampoo in 7 days. Follow the instructions on the package. The main goal is to remove ALL nits. Most re-infestations are due to missed nits in the hair. Use a metal lice comb for best results. This process of nit –removal may take several days. Check all household members and treat if nits and/or lice are identified.
Head Lice do not survive long away from the scalp, for this reason aim your efforts on nit removal. You should wash recently worn clothes and linen in a hot cycle washer, at least 20 minutes in hot dryer or bag for two weeks to get rid of any possible live lice.
Please consult your school nurse if you identify lice in your family to discuss questions, treatment options and solutions at wyrickd@sycamoreschools or 513686-1713..
