Sunflower Elementary Board Report

WELCOME BACK

This has been a great start to the school year. Despite moving the office on the third day of school this has been a relatively smooth start to the year.

On Friday, August 14 all of the Sunflower staff were introduced to the student body. Students cheered as the teacher groups competed in a game of Teacher Hungry Hippo. The Third Grade teachers ended victorious! Students were introduced to Kelsey James the new Music Teacher, Malinda Chappell the new Interrelated Teacher, and two new Para Educators, Chandra Eidson and KateLynn Morin.

NEW SECURED ENTRANCE AND FRONT OFFICE

The Sunflower office staff and Mrs. Kinaman our school nurse moved into the ALMOST completed office space on Friday August 14th. The new office provides for a much needed and more secured entrance to the building.

MAP TESTING

Students began taking the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment last week. MAP is now web-based which allows staff faster access to the data which will be used to place students in their MTSS groups.

WATCHDOG KICKOFF

On August 26th we had our WatchDog Kickoff Night with Cottonwood Elementary. A special thank you to Chris Capettini for bringing us back to the basics and explaining to everyone what the true meaning behind the Watch Dog Program is really about. We had almost half of our spots filled that night.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS

Last week three teachers and myself attended the MTSS Symposium in Wichita along with a team from Cottonwood. I attended sessions presented by Anita Archer, Terry Scott and Randy Sprick. Although they each focused on a different topic it seemed they all came back to the idea that student success starts with great core teaching strategies. This was by and far one of the better conferences I have attended in the past several years.
