Superintendent's Monthly Update
February 5, 2024
Dear Milton Public Schools Community,
I will definitely knock on wood as I say this, but it has been so nice that the weather has been so cooperative and we’ve made it to February with no snow days. I hope this season has been a productive and positive one for our entire community, whether that has meant driving your child to athletic games, attending concerts, or spending time as a family. While a short month, February brings so much to our schools, including Black History Month exploration, Kindness initiatives, Lunar New Year celebrations, World Read Aloud Day, Presidents Day, February Break and more. There is much to celebrate as we welcome February and look forward to the learning and inquiry in the months ahead.
One of the first things that I noticed last year as I was getting to know Milton from afar was the fact that our web presence as a district was hard to nail down. As I clicked deeper into our school and district sites, I found that the way we represent ourselves changed frequently, with many different logos and symbols for our sports teams, our schools, and our district. After being hired in January, I looked for a district logo and couldn’t really figure out which one might be the official MPS logo and which one was a high school logo.
So, as I’ve talked with folks this year, I have found a lot of interest in creating new logos for our district and our schools, keeping our mascots but reimagining them in ways that are uniquely MPS. And what better way to do this than to listen to our students. To that end, over the next months, our principals will be engaging with students in each of our schools to hear from them about the qualities they want to see in their logo, what it might look like, and what it should represent about their school.
This is just one of many ways that we are working to engage our students in being a leading voice in their education. Giving students voice and leadership is a key to establishing a culture that is welcoming, engaging, and impactful.
Have a great month!
With gratitude,
Peter Burrows
