April Vacation Learning Fun
Suggestions from NIS Reading and Math Interventionists
Hello NIS Families,
School vacation weeks provide wonderful opportunities for parents to promote curiosity and learning in relaxed environments. Read on to learn about on-island opportunities as well as resources to support your child's learning, and summer programs that are now open for registration!
Nantucket Historical Association has a craft activity each afternoon in their Discovery room during April break.
Our local public library is also open during vacation week. There is also story walk on the library grounds- check it out. We encourage all NIS students to get library cards and become regular visitors to our local library. https://nantucketatheneum.org/

The NAEP (National Association of Educational Progress) reports that the gap between frequent and infrequent readers gets larger as students get older. Please encourage your child to read daily over vacation. Ask your child to bring home his or her Epic reading login/class code information and also encourage him/her to sign out books from the classroom library. Vacation week is also a great time to practice math skills. Here is a link for some math games that reinforce skills learned in school. Card and board games such as Yahtzee and Scrabble also reinforce math skills and are fun! Don't forget to practice multiplication facts with your child.

Have fun, be curious, and be safe on vacation.
