A Message from the Superintendent A Message from the Superintendent

What’s your E? That’s the question high school students begin considering by the time they are a junior or senior. Last week's CTE Showcase is among the events we provide to our incoming freshmen classes as they prepare to enter the final four years of their K-12 education journey. The three E’s are: Enrollment, Employment, or Enlistment. As your education partner, we aspire to set your children on a path to a bright future that starts with a high-quality high school diploma that provides them with choices.

Upon graduation, many of our graduates will enroll in a 4-year university. Our students matriculate to a variety of public and private schools, including some of the best universities in the country. Other graduates will join the California Community College system and begin their journey to a 4-year university degree by earning a 2-year Associate degree for transfer. California community colleges offer a guaranteed transfer program to many 4-year universities.

In addition to Associates degrees for transfer, California community colleges are also the largest workforce training provider in the nation, educating more than 2 million people a year. Career preparation programs can lead to employment in high-paying industry sectors within one to two years. Many of our high school career pathway programs students learned about at the CTE Showcase lead directly to advanced certification at neighboring community colleges.

Other Alvord graduates enlist in the military after graduation. Our California Cadet Corps at La Sierra High School provides opportunities for students interested in developing leadership, citizenship, and basic military skills. Some of our students enter a U.S. Service Academy such as the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point or the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) at Annapolis.

For students who seek employment immediately upon graduation, career education and particularly certification programs provide the quickest path to a high-paying job and a better future. We work closely with the Riverside County Workforce Development Board, among other community-based organizations and industry partners to help our students enter the skilled labor force pipeline.

The profile of the Alvord graduate includes 21st Century Skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity/innovation), global citizenship and cultural competency, and college and career readiness. Regardless of the "E" our students ultimately choose, it's our job as your education partner to prepare your children to have choices.

Alvord Parent Zone

Our Family Engagement Coordinator, Mr. Erik Ramirez, pictured here with Alvord parents, Perla Rivera, Bianca Rangel, Belen Robledo, and Juana Gabriela, leads our effort to engage our families. For Mr. Ramirez, taking an idea and making it a reality is the leadership challenge he most covets. In this case, it's in collaboration with a team of parents that are stepping up and leading the way in our community.

Mrs. Rivera, Mrs. Rangel, Mrs. Robledo, and Mrs. Gabriela lead the Alvord Parent Zone. They are graduates of the CABE Project2Inspire parent leadership development institute. Mr. Ramirez is continuing the work started by his predecessor, Dr. Alejandro Cisneros, who built the collaborative relationship designed to build capacity within our parent community.

These dedicated Alvord moms are currently focused on a collaboration with the Family Engagement Office to raise awareness around the issue of mental health. The awareness campaign, titled, Parents Supporting Mental Health, aims to connect families to the many resources available to them.

Like many of us, these Alvord moms have directly or indirectly experienced children and adults suffering from anxiety or other mental health concerns. They have all supported and consoled friends and family whose children are struggling in the post-pandemic landscape. In a recent interview, Mrs. Rangel said, "People just don’t know that the schools have services and are willing to help. It just isn’t well known in the community. Many parents are unsure of what can be done and watch their children struggle. We wanted to make sure they knew what Alvord Unified had to offer."

On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you to Mrs. Rivera, Mrs. Rangel, Mrs. Robledo, and Mrs. Gabriela for your efforts on behalf of our students and their families. it's a privilege for us to support the work of the Alvord Parent Zone and continue to collaborate to find effective strategies to make timely information and parent education accessible to all Alvord parents, regardless of the barriers.

Our "See Something. Say Something" campaign has helped us to identify students who have made poor choices, including making threatening or other inappropriate comments in-person or on-line. We protect the anonymity of students reporting inappropriate behaviors. Our We Tip line also provides a safe space to report crimes. Thank you to everyone for doing their part to keep our schools safe.

In Closing....

On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you for supporting our schools. There is no substitute for parent engagement. It is closely linked to better student behavior, higher academic achievement, and enhanced social skills. When parents partner with their schools, it's more likely that their children will avoid unhealthy behaviors, including substance use and other health risk behaviors.

Together, we can help every student succeed. Together, we are #AlvordStrong.

In partnership,

Allan Mucerino
