Building Background Knowledge

Building Background Knowledge is Essential!

Help students get everything they can from your lesson

By connecting the new ideas to what students already know, teachers can help students make a seamless transition between new information and information that is part of their schema. Building background knowledge helps students make connections as they learn; helping them grasp new concepts while tapping into their curiosity.

Make sure to emphasis key vocabulary

Teachers should explicitly teach important vocabulary multiple times to ensure that students have the language tools to grasp true meaning throughout the lesson and/or unit.
Teaching vocabulary can be done in multiple ways, like through song and dance, visuals like chart paper, or games like memory or word searches.
