Growth Mindset in Practice at Westpark
As part of this collaboration, we have spent time delving into the practice of giving out awards at a school-wide assembly. In a recent blog, George Couros, the author of The Innovator’s Mindset, wrote about the practice of school awards assemblies. Mr. Couros divided the students into two camps: those who receive awards and those who don’t. He theorized that the award recipients tend to focus on the award itself rather than the actions that earned the award, and that most students in the audience aren’t motivated by watching, but feel either indifferent or hurt that they didn’t receive an award. There is limited data on the extent of school award-giving, however, there is abundant general research showing that awards, rewards and other external incentives undermine intrinsic motivation.
Thus, it has been a shared leadership decision to make significant changes to the practice of award-giving at Westpark. At the kindergarten and first grade level, students will continue to be recognized with awards at least once per year that focus on the school incentives around growth, effort, and risk-taking. As students age up, they will continue to be recognized by their classroom teacher as part of daily classroom performance and may receive awards at the classroom level for the same areas. We continue to value our PBIS behavior choices and will recognize AIR students of the trimester on the student news broadcasted weekly. Thank you for your support.
