Independent Study Handbook updates

Attached please find a revised Independent Study Handbook. We have made several revisions based on information learned at the California Consortium forIndependent Study conference, and based on feedback we have received from the sites. Several key changes to the handbook are listed below, with all revisions in bold in the attached updated handbook.

  • Prior to enrolling in Independent Study, an SST will be held with the students’ current teachers, counselor (high school), administrator and parents/guardians to discuss the educational options available and determine the best path for the student. Students may enter the Independent Study program at any time during the school year, however, if it is deemed necessary to re-enter onto the main campus, this change will occur only at quarter or semester breaks.
  • A student with an IEP must have a change of placement IEP team meeting prior to being accepted in ISO.

  • ISO courses cannot be labeled differently on the student schedule or transcript. For example, if a student is enrolled in ISO English 11, the transcript must read English 11, without an ISO designation.

  • Students will meet with their supervising teacher a minimum of one hour per week. For UC- a-g approved courses students are expected to spend at least one hour per week per a-g course engaged in interactive instruction and/or academic tutoring/advising. This instruction and/or support may be provided onsite or through virtual means.

  • Independent study students who are not meeting the minimum requirements for attendance will be placed on academic probation. They will receive two warning letters. After the second warning letter, an evaluation will be conducted to determine whether Independent Study is an appropriate placement.

Truancy Reduction Partnership

Thank you to our partners at the District Attorney's Office and Social Services for assistance with proactive truancy reduction. With one of our High Fives being the reduction of chronically absent students, we appreciate the partnership and collaboration- and in addition to the focus at each site, it's making a difference!
